Warping..

Post by MikeBartley » Tue Oct 19, 2010 12:05 am

In Ableton live 8

How do you do yours?

I have watched 3/4 different vids on youtube but none seem to be specific to house music. Am i right in saying that i find the first beat, warp it (straight).. then put the first beat to 1.1.1.. but then what? Go to the outro beats of the track and put them beats in place also?

Also when i seem to have the tracks warped fine (Atleast what i think are fine anyway), when i launch the clip from my APC40, if i dont launch it bang on in time, then my tracks double beat and obviously i dont have a jog wheel to put them back in.. How is this overcome?

I have been searching and searching!

Thanks!!!

Well it sounds to me that the issue isn't with the warping, it's with the launching behavior of the clip itself. You said that you have to launch it bang on time. Make sure that you have the global quantization set to 1 bar at the top (this is in the same area as the play and stop buttons at the top). Then find the clip that you warped, and in the Launch area of the clip view (the little L at the bottom left should be lit) set the 'Quantization' to Global. Now the clip will only launch on beat.

Here's the absolute fastest way I've ever found, specifically for house and 4/4 music. HD tutorial:

This technique is even faster imho...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=frdnvEUU51s

Basically it only consists of
Step 1: Set 1.1.1 here at the beginning of the track + Warp straight from here
Step 2: drag a grey transientmarker at the end of the track to align with the grid

BUT: also this technique only works best for new electronic music, that doesn't involve tempo changes or drifting tempos like in older recordings from MJ or so.

If you want to warp vocals there are some other tutorials on youtube for that.

i'm finding v8 to be a REAL pain, warping wise. Almost every track I warped in v6 would just need a tweak at the start and one at the end to bring it all into line.
I've just had to go through two tracks and almost warp every other beat, and these are digital electronic tracks with no tempo change.
Complete pain in the backside. I only upgraded to v8 because v6 wouldn't work on my new iMac.

If you bought 8 will they let you install a lower version like 7? 7 has the 'old-style' warping like 6.

Yep, that's a good one too. Although I find even modern sequencers have drift, including Live. Have you noticed the same thing?
