Please help noob with time stretching orchestral music clips

Post by Brontoy » Wed Oct 20, 2010 9:07 pm

Maybe this is quite easy, but I have not worked with warping in Live very much at all yet. I am working on a ballet performance with abstract orchestral music of which I do not know the tempo. The music is divided into 10 sections that I have put onto 10 scenes. I need to slow down the music in some scenes. It seems that most of the info on warping in the manual deals with rhythmic material. I am concerned that Live should not induce any "feeling" changes to the music, just slow it all down evenly. How do you time stretch an orchestral music clip properly? How does the tempo of the project (which defaults to 120bpm) affect warping of the orchestral music? Should I try as best I can to tap a tempo of the music and then proceed to warp from there? Should I just leave it at 120bpm? Should I auto warp long samples in the preferences? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,

I would suggest that you import each section without allowing Live to auto warp (because it won't do a good job as there's no rhythm).

Ignore the project tempo, as it doesn't relate to the tempo of your section.

Now, your section will be a certain length (in time) which will take up X number of bars in Live. The bars won't equal the actual bars of the section, but that's OK. You still have a reference point.

Let's say for example that your section is 120s long. You want it to be 180s long. Set two warp markers - one at the start and one at the end.

If your 120s section takes up 60 bars, you need to make it 90 bars.

if you just want to slow down the music in your clips, then make sure you only have 1 warp marker at the beginning of the clip. There is a "warp straight from here"-option in the contextmenu (right-click on the warp marker).

When this is achieved you should be able to change the speed of the clip by changing the value in the clip's bpm-field to your taste.

Keep in mind that once your music is warped it will change it's speed when you change the set's global tempo - so leave that unchanged.

Make sure to use the right warp-algorythm in order to avoid artifacts in the sound.
