Professional mixing technicians?

Post by m.nowakowski » Wed Oct 20, 2010 9:48 pm

Hey there,

Even though I enjoy mixing my own stuff and put a lot of effort in it, sometimes I'd love to hear how one of those true professionals with lots and lots of years and experience would do it. Is there any possibility at all to get some guy to do it before (or even without - or something like a whitelabel) a commercial release? I presume that one of the premises for getting stuff mixed is that there is a way to give credit to the mixing technician, through a release that is.

Any tips on the matter? Electronic music such as techno, by the way.

Regards

Martin

I do mixdowns for a fair price:

a lot of bigger labels offer mixing services regardless of distribution, but they tend to be extremely pricey. I know interscope for one offers this service, but I remember seeing that their prices were a couple hundred dollars per track for a mix-down, if not more.

I would think about a more local option, such as Tarekith^^^ unless you reallllly need that super "professional" mix.

weird question: would you ever be able to do mixdowns / mastering where you then give the customer back say 4 stems ( drums, bass, synth, misc )

some what like getting your live set mastered, I guess you could say.. but then I wonder about the master channel stuff, etc..

At this point I just need to do better mixing and production skills to make my live sets sound better - but in the long run, after a song is mastered for a release or something like that I feel like the only way to perform it is to do it DJ style and not a LIVE PA with separated tracks like I normally do, unless I'm using the unmastered version

I get a lot of people who want me to mix their song, and then give them the Live (or Logic) project file back so they can see what I did, and adapt it to a live set. In those cases as long as people are up to date on the apps and don't mind me using the included plug ins, it works out fine. You get a nice mixdown/master, and you can see exactly HOW I did it.

you usually can hire any engineer to do a mix.. some have the cahrakter to alter your material..some leave it intact.. prices vary form guy to guy and of cause the involved studio..

while the fee for the mix itself is usually somewhere between the wide range of 150 to 1000 euro the day.. the studio can cost up to 2000 the day...

in case someone likes your track it might become much cheaper..

in reality you probaly cant expect it for less than 100 bucks i the box and not less than 200 with propper analog gear...

i never would do that..
learned it the hard way.. didnt got credits from the studio owners for some of the best sounding mixes i have done.. because they choosed to change something in the arrangement after i had left the studio..made another run thru my settings.. and because i wasnt physical present i havent got the credits..

but they gave me replacement credits on one of theier crap mixes i havent done.. and my own studio wanst well equiped at the time so my own stuff sounded rather crappy :-/

so.. when i do it in better studios now i allways reset the place when i leave it..

in the case of this track i found the same fx settings still in use one year later !!
only got payed once..no credits..

thank you friends

This sounds even better, that way I can use my usual <project file TO live set> technique..

I'll give you a shout if a good enough track comes about 8)

however..mixing techno is not a secret art anymore.. was somehow in the beginning because on the huge systems the music sounded so different than on your little ns-10.. opposite to the home stereo situation

by now pretty everybody knows how to mix techno and doing the rockn roll is the more difficould art..

what it actually is.. but in the old times it needed balls to pump up the bassdrum so loud and skills to get the loend under control so the cut went propperly..

all the stuff was cutted to vinyl..

Honestly I don't really care about credits too much. I get paid for what I do, and that's enough for me. I can see it as a promotional tool, but at the end of the day it's doing a good job and getting clients to tell their friends what I do that's made this into a business for me.

sure.. its not about names anymore.. but in the past it was your mixing credit on the record that got you the other jobs..

especially when you dont have an own studio and are dependent that people hire you on top of theoere studio expenses..

however.. i was pretty well booked.. long before i had my own techno singel out i allready mixed a lot of stuff or done the life stage mixing fr bands--

they just learned that they had more applause when i mixed..

one the foh guy of tom petty and the hardbreakers was sick and i had to do it.. i gave them a propper techno sound ..was really cool sounding..but the tom petty fans hated me..
the bass was so loud..and the bassdrum...

actually theier drummer and bassplayer was brilliant..you just never really get that the way they are usually get mixed..

a few years later that stye of mixing would have qualified as bigbeat i guess..

however..160$ is a tough price margin..less would be ripoff to yourself...

any stuff got released yet from your mixes? do you have an example that turned out especially well?

just one question..you mastered for tejada and autechre? or have you mastered theire already mastered tracks?

i just wonder because the original and master are so much closer to each other than you usually have it..

That's a good question, I need to check up on some of the stuff I've worked on this year and see where it's at.

They were unmastered, but both in that case had a pretty well defined sound already. Didn't need much work, so I didn't do much. It happens sometimes, usually with the better artists. Fastus is another one I work with like that, his stuff is usually really nice sounding already by the time I get it. It's less about
correcting things in those cases, than it is just double-checking nothing unexpected is present. I wish all my work was as enjoyable as those are ;)
