MIDI Interface Question

Hey guys, so I understand that the only way to have multiple MIDI devices controlling parameters on a single laptop is to use a MIDI interface. It is not recommended to daisy-chain instruments by looping them via MIDI Thru is this correct? So my question is: If you have a midi interface (e.g. midisport) will that serve as the whole playback soundcard device and midi interface or can you use it as just a MIDI hub then use a seperate soundcard for playback etc?
