I remember once reading an article that said madlib doesn't have a cell phone pager or email and that
he does this specifically so he wouldn't be distracted from music and I read something similiar about quincey jones one time years ago, I know that distractions like that drive me crazy and I won't keep a phone in a room where I'm working on music but right now I think the biggest issue is that I don't live alone, or that my current roomys matter to me, I've had roommates before that I wasn't involved with and at most they were just irritating but never to the point that it blocked creativity, it's the fact that the people I live with now matter to me that my focus is off

you can't let anyone matter to you if you want to make music.

Funny topic, some posts are so recognisable.

I thought I really had a problem / addiction. Perhaps this is true, but al least now I know I'm not alone.

I even want to emigrate to Brasil not purely for this reason, lovely country, temperature etc. But it was a great part. Already bought a house there because it's cheaper to live wich leaves me with more free time to do what I want.

A bit of work as a Dj at night in brasil and the rest trying to produce some tracks. In Holland where I now live, working consumes too much time, I work in shifts as a cranedriver....really fucked up !! And when I'm in Holland friends visiting, family things.
I feel I'm being too rude when I don't go anywhere anymore and tell everyone to leave me alone and let me do my music thing, but
often I stay at home, wandering in the digital realm of ableton.

Funny what was posted earlier in this topic : I envie the drones that can watch movies etc :)

we converted our dinning room but i would much rather have a separate place.. garage, basement, back yard studio... what ever.. somewhere we can go and just focus.
i was just thinking about my friends old studio in his back yard... man i miss that place.. great vibe and all about the music..
i'd prefer a place where i live but separated from my living..

i've used storage units as practice spaces before which is nice but i like it near my house

In the apartment I had a bedroom for music but had to do everything with headphones. In my new house I have a large bonus room over the garrage. It has been great. Room for VDrums, keyboards, two computers, ... everything. Plus a reclyner and TV/XBox. I added a seperate air conditioner because all of those electronics really heats up the room. I still don't play loud because of neighbors but it had been great.

At least it was. Lately either my mom, my sister, or both are there every weekend. I don't get anything done when they are around as I feel obligated to be in the same room when they visit. Just bought a LaunchPad and plan to turn the breakfast nook into a mini-Ableton Live studio. That way maybe I can still make some music while keeping an eye on my 80+ year old mom.

hey congrats on having an 80+ year old mother what a blessing, my moms not their yet but she's making her way. I keep all of her phone messages, they make a surreal sample library that I could never use but that has turned into a little treasure of it's own.

Oh man, I know how this feels.

Here's my situation:
I live in what they call an "in-law suite" (it's basically the size of a one-car garage... private entrance living space/office). It's a room I rent in a house my friend owns. I have a full desk with all the basics: digital piano, Korg PadKontrol, Maschine, Mackie Control, DJ setup, dual monitors, etc... guitars here and there, condenser microphone in the corner, plus an electronic drum kit. It's cramped in here and I don't have a fully set-up bed!!! I have a twin mattress that I put down on the floor to sleep on, and when I teach guitar lessons and such (on weekends), I have to hide it in the hallway so the parents of students I teach don't think I sleep in here. During the week I just stash the mattress on top of some short bookcases, leaned against the wall.

It's hard for me to write and record songs because my friend is always sleeping in the living room (falls asleep to the TV constantly, from 11am-2pm, as he works mornings mostly). The living room is about 15 feet from my living space and from 8-2pm is when I find myself most productive since I go to work at 3pm. I have a guy directly above me also (a roommate I never talk to), so making even a small amount of noise after 10pm is out of the question.

I blame them both for my lack of song completion, but the reality is, it's my fault.... to be in full music mode, you need to ignore everything around you... and just DO IT (and I don't). The television's on, the internet connection's on my laptop (my main music computer isn't connected to the internet).... I make excuse after excuse as to why I can't fully finish music... and again, it's all my fault.

If I had a finished basement that was fully dedicated to music-making, I'd probably get the same amount done as this current space... because of sheer laziness.

I'm trying to change, but it's hard. I also blame the fact that I work a lot on why I can't finish songs. The reality is, I work part-time (but get paid decently)... as mentioned above, I have 5-6 hours before work to get music done (having the house all to myself for the most part), and I can headphone it when I get home from work at 10pm..... but it's hard to stay motivated (especially without a girlfriend).

Do you guys have any photos of your studios/lack of studios/music "corner"? I'm curious to see all of your workspaces or lack thereof....

My story........

Called; I NEED MY HEADROOM!

At the moment i got some of the problems too that others point out in their posts. I have been together with my girlfriend now for allmost 16 years and we did live in an appartment before we started to build a new house. In the appartment it was very difficult to produce music at loud peaks so i had to use my headphones alot to get something finished. At that time i was dreaming about how wonderful it would be when we where moving into the new house, thinking that everything would be cool, but it isn't at the moment.

The house is big, alot of space i even got a room for my little studio, so far so good but we have no doors in the house since 2 years because the money had to be used on other important things on the house and my girlfriend will only buy expensive (3000$ for one) doors made in italy for the house, how silly is that? (laughing). The other problem is that if you live in a house, theres always thousands of things to be done, otherwise the wife will be killing me!

We got a dog and three cats and i love them but sometimes it's just a pain in the a... when i am trying to get things done in the studio, they play around and are making noise, and i can't even close my door to the studio?! When my girlfriend is working (nurse) is the best time to do things in the studio, because then i am alone and can focus on my music 100% playing loud too and i love these moments, but she have to sleep during the day so i can only work when she's not there, otherwise she will give me a feeling that i only got music making in my head, and offcourse a women knows how to spoil your good mood in a way that are very disinspirating to make music in.

Sometimes i get very angry because i feel that i could be a lot more productive if i was living alone, but again i love my girlfriend, the dog, the cats and all the other things, so i guess i just have to see it in a positive way, and use the time i got when i am alone to be creative, but its just not allways that easy to deal with.

Inspiration comes on different times a day, i personally like to produce late in the evening to late in the night, as i was working as dj for 20 years and for me night is often day. That's the times where i feel good and productive in my studio, but it's not always working, but i hope that it will soon.

I now decided to built in a cheap door just until the real doors are arriving, otherwise i will go insane....He He! :D

Kind regards

Lol I know what you're saying. I just ended a relationship with my girl and I'm getting my own place. I can't wait. As far as the internet, it is quite an addiction. So easy to be distracted from the middle of a song, to check your facebook or this site. I think maybe I wont have it at my new place.

Yeah. Hell, I have to take my laptop and Push up to the cafe where all the young people smoke hookah just to get motivated some days or I'll just spend it on the internet. Once I get in the swing of things I can internet and sketch ideas at the same time but at home I often ended up reclining and convincing myself I can work later. I eventually do. Around 4 in the morning when my neighbors are trying to get their last hours of sleep. I hate looking like a hipster douche bag but apparently the kids at the cafe think it's cool or at least they just like staring at the flashing lights. ::shrug::
