Setting up my Gaia with ableton

Post by Zade » Thu Oct 28, 2010 8:45 pm

Hi Guys,

I just bought a Roland Sh01 GAIA we've managed to get the audio in and playing but really want to have 2 channels one for audio and one for midi. When setting up the midi channel with the audio channel im unsure as the which settings to pick to get the note to trigger through ableton. Nothing seems to be happening midi wise when pressing on the keys on the gaia.

We currently ONLY have midi running from OUT of the GAIA into the IN on my fast track pro soundcard.

Any ideas on generally how to setup hardware with ableton?

Would be a great help

Thanks guys

Z

Hi Z, have you set up the Fast Track Pro as a MIDI input device? Under Preferences->MIDI, you should make sure that you have "track" "sync" and "remote" enabled for input from the Fast Track Pro. You'll then want to enable In/Out View on the MIDI track with the instrument that you want to control, and select the Fast Track Pro for "MIDI from." You might have to try a few channels to get the one that your device has been assigned to, coming from the Fast Track Pro.

Hi David,

Will try the above tonight once back from work.

Its working great at the moment, sampling wise but i want abit more control as to whats going on and for automation it would be great.

Do i need another midi cable feeding from the soundcard to the synth? as i currently only have a midi link running from the out of my synth to the in on my soundcard.

Thanks mate

Hi Z, you'll want to be careful about this - you're trying to simultaneously send MIDI from and receive MIDI to the same device? Yes, you'll need two cables to do this, but you should also be careful not to override things.

Hi David

I've managed to hook the GAIA up via USB, will this be ok latency wise? seems to be a split second bit of lag between when the notes...

Would i be better using midi?

Hi Z, the latency you're talking about has to do with audio, not MIDI. You can reduce latency by reducing the number of samples in the buffer. Keep in mind, however, that doing this puts a greater strain on your processor.

As for MIDI, what settings do you have for the Gaia under Preferences->MIDI? It's likely that direct USB is the lowest latency you'll get; going through a 5-pin MIDI connection, the signal will first need to be converted by the Fast Track Pro before it reaches Live.

Hi D,

Thanks for the info so far, i've turned the lat down on my soundcard and now only have 8 ms lat...

Whats usually a cope-able amount? I guess now a A/D upgrade is the way forward... hmmm

In Midi...

I currently have an input/output for the SH-01.

Under Midi Port SH01 (because of using via USB).

I've switched all of the track, sync and remote to ON. (If this is correct?).

I dont however have anything selecting in control service/input/output (next to dump).

Thanks D
