when launching a scene using a mouse or the arrow keys + enter, the horizontal (track) selection does not change. when triggering a scene with a mapped midi key however, the horizontal (track) selection jumps to the master track. this matters because the clip in view no longer "follows" the scene that is selected, instead the clip view just goes blank because the master track becomes selected each time.
i tried deselecting the "select on launch" button in the preferences, but then the vertical selection doesn't select the scene when triggering it through mapped midi keys. is there a way to make triggering scenes through midi behave the same way as selecting the scene with a mouse or arrow keys?
triggering a scene with midi, the master track gets selected

no, i mean horizontal (left/right arrow keys) selection which you can select tracks, not scenes
the vertical (up/down arrow keys) selection is where you can select scenes, not tracks
try triggering a scene by mapping it to a midi key. if you don't have "select on launch" on in your preferences, then triggering a scene will not select the scene, but only play it.
if you do have the "select on launch" on, then triggering a scene will both select the scene AND select the master track which the "launch scene" button is located. this is different than using a mouse click or enter to launch a scene, because they will also select the scene but NOT select the master track. the way scenes launch from mouseclicks or enter button is preferred because the clip view will show which ever clip is selected each time you launch a scene, instead of going blank from the master track being selected.
