Chopping up a track for live performance?

Post by omutumo » Fri Oct 29, 2010 5:29 pm

How does everyone do it? My major problem (which I can't find a solution for, searched all night), is that I have a track I can barely work on because of cpu restraints and I need to chop it up into manageable clips for live performance.

I've tried experimenting for days now but I can't find a workaround to apply the return effects and the master effects to individual channels or groups.

This particular track I've narrowed down to 7 channels that I'll use live but most share returns and I have some light mastering effects on the master channel. I thought I'd nailed it when I decided to solo the tracks I wanted together then render the master channel but this didn't work (and took hours to finish too!). Not sure why it didn't work either...?

Are there any other methods I could use? There must be some way to route all the signals I need. Its particularly frustrating as I have no room to work on the set because I just keeps maxing out the cpu meter :(

I'm listening to what I managed to do by rendering 7 'masters' and it's not as bad as I thought at first... but the mastering stage has messed up a bit. Unless someone can tell me a better way of doing this I think I'm going to settle for what I've done so far and maybe stick a multi-band compressor on my live set master channel to make up the difference (the widening seems to have worked 'ok').

Guess I'll have to think up a better method of making tracks so I don't get caught out by the transition in the future.

Set up another audio channel and in the io section choose resample. Then you can record straight into the live set (once you've armed it of course) anything you want to be combined into a clip by soloing them. I use this to reduce cpu usage by midi channels.

Don't forget you can use freeze and flatten functions by right-clicking the channels.

There are also a number of other ways of maximizing your pc to handle cpu load better.

For one use basic graphics...

The other way is to open your task manager and right-click Live in the applications tab. Select 'go to process'. Once you've been taken to the process (live.exe) you can right-click again and choose select priority. If you choose realtime the cpu will be focused on live and any background proecsses will be ignored. This does help and I've started using it when I perform or my computer starts getting sluggish.

I highly recommend getting a programme called TuneUp Utilities. It recommends lots of things to help keep your computer in good health and running smoothly.

Hope this stuff helps

I found this really useful. The same stuff applies to Windows 7.

Apologies if you're a mac user but I'm sure similar ideas can apply, you'll just have to do some research

i have been using this application called Game booster to free up some extra ram and it works quite beautifully, i usually get up 250 mb of ram freed up!
it basically just shuts down all the unnecessary background services for you. http://www.iobit.com/gamebooster.html
