Remote SL or Zero without automap

Post by madlab » Sun Oct 31, 2010 5:52 pm

This has probably already been answered and discussed to death but searching brings too much irrelevant answers and life is short : is it possible to use the remote SL or Zero in Live without installing automap Like I do with my X-Station ? A fellow of mine wants to buy one but is really suspicious about the instability of Automap.

yes you can.

suspicious of automap? don't believe everything you read on the interweb, it's only a place for people to piss and moan. automap is a little weird but it's never cause a crash for me.

I know, as I use it myself with a nocturn and guille's script. But I can't deny it's been a little temperamental... like losing the mappings I had done for theater cues for example. My friend works with another guy who can slip a little voodoo in everything he touches and who complained about automap with two devices (nocturn and launchpad).

edit : like your signature leading to a Sonic Youth track

Do you use it with the latest versions and developments for Live ?

Been a fan of Sonic Youth since the early 90's, but the latest stuff didn't really catch my attention. (this turns into a double headed topic).

actually, TBH the APC40 has replaced my SL25 in my setup. I was an early adopter with the SL and used it for years but in hindsight I'm realizing I don't use it at all anymore. weird.

with Sonic Youth I heard Incinerate in a shop and realized I had to dig into them again. picked up Murray Street, The Eternal, Rather Ripped and the Deluxe version of Dirty with some amazing instrumental tracks.

then there's classic tracks like Bull In The Heather. I can never listen to this track loud enough.

You never have to automap on at all. Live's 'automap' template does not require Novation automap software.

I've had much luck with the Zero SL MkII, and really dig the device. Also, with automap, I've had some oddities but no deleted mappings. I've just had it get weird when Live wants to take over, as it seemingly is able to control the device sans-automap(Automap Pro is running, but the automap light on the device is off).

Sonic Youth's new work is absolutely amazing. I love basically all of their work(though I can only stomach some of those weirder SYR vinyl releases if I'm in a certain mood). I recommend Sonic Nurse to anyone, and have seen them on that tour, Rather Ripped as well as The Eternal and every show has been incendiary. Absolutely amazing live band, but sonically and visually.

I've used a Remote Zero without automap for years... no issues, although i don't depend on it too much in the way of customization. i use it for controlling the mixer and the basics.

Sonic Youth are fabulous... i picked up Surfer Rosa again about a year ago. Love that album... especially that song (whose name escapes me right now) that is at the end of Fight Club when the credit/bank buildings are blowing up in the background.... so 8)

Definitely The Pixies - Where is My Mind, and Surfer Rosa is certainly a Pixies album. Boy did they suck live when I saw them live. It was a festival though.

Although, during Sonic Youth's set at the same festival(Voodoo Fest New Orleans 2000something), I was literally trying to figure out where my mind was.

Thanks for those infos about automap.

About Sonic Youth, for those amongst you who read french (?) or have a good translation soft, here is a link to an interview of Steve Albini talking about them. The guy seems to be really upset...
edit : that's better with the link

Hi there my good people. I apologize if this has been answered before, but I need answers. I just received today the Novation ReMOTE 25 SL (the discontinued one). And no matter what I do, the only message I get is Automap is Offline :( And can't assign anything manually to Ableton Live 8.1.3, because the Ableton software won't detect it  Please help, thx in advanced!!

1 - Why are you using 8.1.3?
2 - Have you installed the automap software? what version?
3 - Are you trying to use automap universal for plug-ins or the Ableton template? They are different.
4 - If the latter in (3), have you set anything in preferences as it tells you in the manual?
