Re: Cakewalk Sonar X1
Sonar and Pro Tools had their previous versions supporting 64 bit. Now they are pushing out new versions. That is something that should, imo, affect Ableton's timetable for a new version of Live. But, most of all, Live 9 should be stable so we don't have none of this instability as we did with version 8.

Re: Cakewalk Sonar X1
Protools is not truly 64 bit, only 64 bit compatible. (meaning it runs under 64 bit o/s and only some functionality such as the mix buss is 64 bit, as is Ableton Live's).
64 bit daws on Mac - Logic 9.1 upwards, Presonus Studio One and Reaper.
64 bit daws on PC - Sonar (5,6,7,8,X1), Cubase (4.5 and 5), Nuendo 5, Presonus Studio One, Reaper.
DAWS which are not fully 64 bit yet
Mac - Digital Performer, Reason, Live, Protools 8/9, Cubase (although C6 will have 64 bit options).
PC - Samplitude/Sequoia, Acid Pro, Reason, FL Studio, Live, Protools 8/9.

Re: Cakewalk Sonar X1
he guys, have you took a close look to X1 or Sonar 8.5 (although ugly)? Have you seen what you can do with it??
.......EVERYTHING!!!!
I used to be a big live-fan, but i'm seriously thinking about switching to X1 next year for studioprojects. I'm already mixing in Reaper (much better sound -- yes YOU heard right -- MUCH BETTER SOUND).
In X1 there are so much cool functions built in, for example audio to midi, matrix-view (a "little" session-view), the new pro-channelstrip etc, etc
ah and fully customizable screen layout and screensets which is BIIIIIIIIIGGGGGG for fast working. You can do comping, you can use as much rum as you want (also with 32 bit plugins). No more "Not enough memory-messages", hehe.
I'm asking myself, how long do I want to work with a programm which lacks so much professional features I would use every day -- I mean no customizable shortcuts (it's 2010) just for example. Also Live starts to look really old with the annoying fold/unfold track to see whats inside, no vertical zoom, etc....
And IF live 9 (or whatever it will be called) comes out, what features will they include and again (dont give us new plugs) HOW MUCH WILL I STILL MISS compared to a BIG and yes "REAL" DAW.
So my switch is somehow sure now. But I would really like a comment from Ableton on the new Live-Version at least what is the earliest time next year to expect it, and just a liitle info about anything. But they are'nt saying anything. They don't even bring a cool 8.5 with some new features. Studio One did great with the 1.5 update, maschine too. Just we live-users have to sit through a year of a bad Version 8 and now as it start to work somehow with less crashes, no word from the abes on ANYTHING (except: "No, there won't be any Live 9 any time soon"). I think this is not a cool move. We the users are sitting in the black and have to speculate.
Ah, and reaper 4 is also coming out Febrruary/March.
SO Abes bring it on dudes

Just had a look at Sonar X1. "Matrix view" is disappointing.
There's still nothing out there that competes with Lives Session View as an alternative composition tool, sketchpad, DJ tool, etc.

i dont use cakewalk, but i can assure you that live is falling behind in a lot of simple stuff.
no way to custom set up your mixes in a duel screen setup? you got to be kidding me?
no custom key commands? its a joke....
i really hope that live 9 is a rewrite with all these basic tools, cause i cant take anymore mfl devices.

that's what most people seem to tuse it as and its grreat for that brainstorming process. that's the way I first heard about it was folks using it to brainstomr then dump into tools.
agreed with the mfl commnet. Like so many has said hopefully mfl is not ableton's get out of developing features route.
Everday we don't hear about live 9 is another day I'm happy cause that means even more hard work is being put into developing 9.

Live struggles with lots of things that are standard in most other sequencers, yet it can do things other software can't do. I think the problem is that Live means so many different things to different people.arctic ranger wrote: i dont use cakewalk, but i can assure you that live is falling behind in a lot of simple stuff.

Personally, I am stuck with Live until another application comes along that allows me to compose with midi and audio loops on a matrix in such a fun and elegant way.
I feel your pain though. I'd love to see Live support dual screens, give us a better browser, and, for the love of God, give us BARS/beats feedback in midi view.

...and something like an "Info Line" as in Cubase/Reason to make editing easier and more precise.

Re: Cakewalk Sonar X1
i've been having my eye on sonar x1 for quite some time now and i am just about to try it out for reals.
surely it will take alot of time to adjust myself to the cluttered interface (which is one of the reasons why i love live), and the lack of being able to fast and conveniently building the x1 eqvivalent of live's device-racks (which is the other major sreason i love live), but quite frnakly live doesn't cut it any more. i work more and more with realtime input of things, be it automation, instrument recordings what ever, and live doesn't offer enough control any more.
i guess that i will phase out live completely form my workflow once i get comfortable enough with something else, because the only reason i still use it now is because i am used to it and the device racks. that's all. both of these things are adaptable quite easily. it's missing so many things that i've found myself need or craving recently that i feel that without the deviceracks (and the session view for live performance then) live wouldn't even be considered a substandard daw for me.
demoralizing to ableton perhaps, but yeah. it's a tough reality as a software developer (especially one that ships out addons and shit instead of updates).

Re: Cakewalk Sonar X1
Live is also way over priced.
Re: Cakewalk Sonar X1
I spent an hour at a neighbors house that has Sonar X1, it's seems to be better than the previous versions. But the UI is a little busy and reminds me of getting lost in FL Studio.
Re: Cakewalk Sonar X1
Did you see anything that they may have copied from Live and FL? I have all 3.rcpunker wrote:I spent an hour at a neighbors house that has Sonar X1, it's seems to be better than the previous versions. But the UI is a little busy and reminds me of getting lost in FL Studio.
As for working with midi in a piano roll, Ableton isn't even a distant second to the other 2.
Sonar also has a score editor.
Each one is unique and sometimes comparing is like apples and oranges.
I have every version of Sonar from 2 but I skipped 6. The GUI was getting out of hand.
For a 1st DAW, as far as what's inclued FL XXL is the best value, Sonar Producer would be a second. Ableton lacks extras the others have. But this is if you haven't owned a DAW before and need a lot of bells and whistles.
Interesting that Reason, Acid and FL have not jumped on the 64 bit bandwagon. The only 64 bit app I have that is very stable happens to be Reaper.
I like Ableton's uniqueness.
