Octapad set up fpor midi controlling synths etc
Octapad set up fpor midi controlling synths etc
Hi Guys,
I have a Octapad spd 30 and i was trying to use the usb midi to allow me to trigger drum racks and ableton instruments such as bass synths etc.
I have connected the Octapad via usb to my laptop and its recognised and says usb working etc.
When I open Live and look to play a drum rack after tweeking the midi note positions on the octapad i can hear drum hits when i strike a pad but when i try to use a Bass synth from say Sylenth nothing .
What do I need to do set the octapad to allow control of both drum racks and instruments?
Cheers
JWC

if its sending midi to drum racks it should work for other instruments too. maybe check that the midi channels are set to receive midi "all ins" and that they are record armed (track record button red).
also, the octapad could be sending super low or high midi notes that might not be picked up by a synth. use some midi monitoring software or see where its triggering in your drum racks.

well. when i tried this with my spd-30 i found out that it is sending out extremely short notes. have you tried turning up the release. also try to record something and look how the notes look.

Yeah you might be right because there are notes sounding the quitest and briefest of notes in a synth instrument every so often then the rest of the time silence

Re: Octapad set up fpor midi controlling synths etc
I've got an SPD-30 - I think there's a problem with the firmware on early batches - the adjustment to the note length doesn't work properly. But if you check out the Roland website, it has the file to update the firmware so this problem is no longer. I've not bothered to do this yet though - as have got round it by putting a Midi note length device in front of what ever you want to play...

Ok thanks so much for the heads up on this issue.
Could you advise me of where i would find this midi note length device fine sir? Can it be found in Ableton 8?

Would it be this Midi note length device? If so What setting would you suggest?

That's the one - I think all you need is to change the note length, the rest you can pretty much leave as it is...
