Thank you sir! That is amazing.

I need to spend more time with this program. I am only using 5% of it's capabilities.

That is only true for the "hard" contest. The "free" one you can use 100% of Live ;).

Thanks Frank

Yeah I understand but i think doing both will be instructive as I don't use Live very much yet.

Question : Is there a requirement to use audio clips for the hard contest? I'd rather not use them if as have no use for clips or loops I use midi track with VI or samplers 99% of the time.

Cheers,
Gordon

Yes, you don't have to use audio loops. You can use Simpler and Impulse in the "Hard" category and in addition Operator in the "Free" category. But beware, no VST or AU plug-ins are allowed in the song.

sarcazm wrote:Few clarifications needed re the hard comp.

1) When you say that we can't use 3rd party library samples, do you just mean those samples which are commercially sold?? In other words, are the samples given away in Computer Music OK, or do we need to use solely the included Ableton ones (and any that we have made ourselves)?
When you deliver the self contained song, the samples you use will be included. This is not allowed for comercial libraries, even if they come free with a magazine. You can only use the samples delivered by Ableton and you can do samples by yourself.
sarcazm wrote: 2) To confirm that I understand correctly regarding the use of VST instruments, is it ok to use a VST in a midi track then bounce it down to an audio track for the final version??
Yes, that is ok as long as the VST is no longer in the final song.
sarcazm wrote: 3) Is it also ok to use a non Ableton effect on an audio track and then bounce that down to another track for submission?
Yes, if you bounce it, it doesn't matter. Only the final song has to be free of VSTs and follow the rules.

I would like to read in the production notes how you did the song.

Nice track Mididreamer! :)
And I just love the sound of the Grand you've got going there. You've seriously only used Ableton's stuff? Wow!

I got two questions:
- Can I participate even though I'm just a registered Live Lite 4 user?
- I'm assuming copyrighted samples are okay to use as long as they are not in the final zip file. It's okay as long as they're FX'ed and chopped beyond recognition. Am I right?

So we're only allowed to use Impuls and Simpler if we want to use sample instruments? The sound libraries that comes with samplers are copyrighted you know.

While the samples that come with a sampler are copyrighted... most of the licenses allow you to create a loop using the samples... generally the intent of the restriction is to prevent somebody from creating a 'loop' that is say a progression of C, C#, D, D#... this would violate most if not all sampler contracts. All they are trying to prevent is somebody profiting from their blood sweat and tears... if you wanted to make your own loop library off of a grand piano sampler patch from NI Kontakt for example, you would be allowed to do this. If the license prevented you from most commercial applications such as constructing a song (or solo'ing it in an intro) for example, nobody would be buying these products...

Plus the 'hard' contest doesn't specify that you cannot construct your own loops from hardware for example... or mic'ing something up and recording yourself banging a spoon into a tea kettle or something... these would all be valid as well. What they wouldn't want you to do though is to load up your favorite sampler, play a kick drum from battery and sample that into live... load that into impulse and then create a midi drum track out of that... this would be a violation of contract...

Thank you for listening  All samples and midi loops came with the 100 MB package you can download from the Abletons 8) You can find it in the Factory content, just did some pitch shifting to make a sample fit in the song.

Have a good contest
