Create in Maschine, Finish in Ableton??

Post by DIjaKeR » Thu Nov 11, 2010 7:39 am

Hello guys,

I'm still totally unexperienced and for now I am thinking of buying a good Controller. In my researches in the internet I found this:

http://www.thomann.de/de/native_instrum ... schine.htm

Is the Maschine sth I can create sounds or little passages of a track with, in order to assemble/combine/mix them later in Ableton?

Is the software of Maschine itself good enough to produce some tracks (on a beginner-level)?

Can I combine both and maybe control Ableton with the Maschine Controller?

I need to use my money wise for a nice startup in the "Music-producing-scene" ^^
Thanks for your advice!

Maschine is a groovebox/sequencer combination that comes with a massive amount (7GB) of sampled drums/percussion & instruments which sound pretty damn good - so yea you can create patterns & loops or produce whole tracks with it - then export them into live easily via drack&drop (audio or midi)

Maschine integrates perfectly into Live (as a VST)... but you can use it standalone aswell - its good enough create tracks even on a professional level

yes, as i said it integrates perfectly and you can switch if you want to controll Maschine or Live (via Midi) on the Fly on the controller itself

I highly recommend that you watch the Maschine tutorials on the NI website to get a better Picture of what it is capable of - check them here: Maschine Tutorials

and after your done with them check this topic on here: The Maschine & Ableton Love Thread ;) [upon user request] (its only 45 pages long :P )

this should answer pretty much every question you have about Maschine !

If you can wait a week, you might want to have a look at Fxpansion Geist: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NtubN2CSxhU

Combine this with a pad controller (Korg Pad Kontrol, for example) and you'll have similar functionality to Maschine, for less cash.

Maschine is great though.

@ Nick Shepherd: Okay, that answers my question better than I expect, thanks a lot!!

And I'm really sorry for my noobielike-questions, but I bet they will become more complex when I've got more experience

@ necho: Mh that Geist is kind of mysterious, maybe not a good way if I need help with it, and no one knows it or got experience with it^^ i would prefer Maschine.

@ BlackMath: Whatever you wanted to express, it was an helpless and unnecessary post!

That's because Geist hasn't been released yet.

It comes out on 17th November. It'll definitely be worth a look.

Have to say, Maschine is the only bit of kit I really regret selling.

Yes it really good really quick to record pattern. And it works VERY well with Live, because once you randomly created a bunch of pattern, drag n drop to clips in sessions view and play around to make your arrangment. So fast and easy.

Yes to all your questions.
DIjaKeR wrote:Can I combine both and maybe control Ableton with the Maschine Controller?
Yes but this will become unnecessary for a lot of people very soon because NI just dropped the bomb of a free update announcement for 1.6, which will have plugin hosting:
http://www.native-instruments.com/forum ... 1289488022

This means that a lot of people will stop using Live in tandem for composition purposes and just use Maschine standalone. Maschine has some key advantages over Live's session view in that you can record real-time parameter automation into loops/patterns as well as undoing your recorded loops and deleting parts of your recorded loops in real-time selectively. And not to mention you can do pretty much everything from its amazing dedicated controller.

In other words, you can now truly say that you can:

Create in Maschine, Finish in Maschine.

Can Maschine act as a VST plugin within Live? That is, once I have a MIDI clip, can I send the MIDI to the Maschine software as a VST plugin and then merge it into the Live setup?

As a related question, is it possible to use Maschine as a VST within live to trigger Live's synths?
