One Instrument Belonging to TWO Choke Groups OR Nested Choke

Post by dchang0 » Fri Nov 12, 2010 5:04 am

By the title I mean that one instrument can belong to say, choke group 1 AND choke group 2.

There's a really, really good reason for this: hi-hats.

My hi-hat trigger recognizes a pad and a rim section with different note values for each. For the purposes of this discussion, we'll only focus on the open hi-hat sounds.

There is also a foot pedal with its own note value.

If all three are put into choke group 1, then the pedal chokes the open hi-hat pad and the open hi-hat rim sounds, which is great.

BUT, the problem is that the open hi-hat pad and the open hi-hat rim choke each other, which is not how real hi-hats work.

If we allow a single instrument to belong to multiple choke groups, this allows us to create simple "joins" and "intersections" that can solve the problem.

For instance:

Open hi-hat pad = choke group 1
Hi-hat pedal = choke groups 1 AND 2
Open hi-hat rim = choke group 2

Thus, the open hi-hat pad doesn't choke the open hi-hat rim and vice versa, and yet, the hi-hat pedal chokes both.

Thanks guys! Oh, and if there's a way to pull this off that I don't know about, please let me know!

There's another way to pull this off using NESTED choke groups and chains. If we could nest choke groups, then we could do this:

Put the open hi-hat rim and open hi-hat pad into one chain with NO choke group (so that they do not choke each other).

Put the chain and the hi-hat pedal into one choke group so that they choke each other.

I tried this in the current Ableton Live 8, and it doesn't work.

+1

Great idea, and very necessary for realistic Hi-Hat performance.
