And while were at it: also build an iPad touch controller App, run it from an APC second gen with iPad docking, and streamline the software app on the the iPad, matching this Live template. After all Live is a flexible beast.

Im in the prosess of creating a Maschine/Nano Studio inspired template for the APC40, with the help of Native Kontrolls APC presets. Shurely Ableton could do something like this.
true but the genius of maschine is not having to go through any of that. maschine is not about geeking out, that's why it's got the electronic dev crowd off kilter. I'm sure they don't know whether to respond to maschine by geeking out more or going back to basics at this point but it will be interesting to see.
Just watching the machine vids and it seems like a very fast workflow.

Hmmm, i like the 'back to basics' approach. Don't want to learn Max4Live. Just want stuff that works.

Geeking out is fine...to an extent. Making music should be fun. Not a total geek fest.

Still holding out for now and see what develops.

Hmmmmm...

The only way I could afford to buy Maschine again would be to sell my Live licesne and use Reaper for arrangement and mixing.

Very, very tempted.

I had a weird streak where I was finding great stuff on craigslist for $200 bucks, maschine was one of them, new in the box and the guy just didn't even give it a chance he thought it was a piece of crap haha
anyway you can find deals if you look, I haven't seen any more for that price but a friend of mine got found one for $350

There are quite a lot diehard MPC fanatics hating on Maschine (check Gearslutz.com for some lulz) - this update will kick their butts ^^

On the other hand, i get its not everybodys cup of tea - but in combination with Live, its great integration and the super fast & inspiring workflow make Maschine pure win - at least for me 8)

anyways congratz on that Maschine deal - 200$ is a killer price !

I have my Maschine on sale on ebay!
Less than one day left!
Item ID: 270661878034
(however after the announcement of the 1.6 update, the idea of cancelling the auction grew inside my mind..)

You dont get it. The geek free workflow will be similare to Maschine. Thats the whole point: a special APC template with iPad App extension/combo. Perhaps it could be locked from Ableton, like those Amp racks that came recently. And if you had Suite you could open it and geek out. In fact it can even get better then Maschine: you get clip names and clip color on the hardware. First gen would be present existing iPad w/iOS 4.2 and APC40.

I could happily organize this job, but I would have to team up with someone like Styx from native kontrol, Hoffman from covops for Max, and ST8 from Live Control or Liine, or those french guys, for iOS Touch Apps. It might not even need Max. But we could possibly see a free runtime next year.

Edit: iphone typos.

While I support your idea fully, I still think it might be you who's not fully getting it. Your alternative is a customization that requires 2 pieces of hardware, an APC and an ipad, the cost of which is already double Maschine. It's also two pieces of gear to accomplish what one does. And I'm not so sure that you'd be able to navigate the file browser from the ipad app. Not to mention there would still be no velocity sensitive drum pads anywhere. So the whole workflow of using a single device and not even need to interact with the computer sort of gets killed as well as decreased playability.

But I'm sure what you're tlking about would be cool too, especially for people with an ipad and apc who don't have maschine. Competition and options are good.

why are so many people on here acting like Maschine is a DAW replacement?? Yeah you will be able to load VSTs, but a list of all the DAW functions it still can't do would take pages to type. It's not even near Reason level functionality. Using it solely as your DAW would result in one very crippled workflow, especially if you were selling live to get there. baffling!

I think though that it is more like an MPC, and many producers, especially hip hop and house used to *compose* everything in the MPC and then record onto some other medium. Seems like many actually prefer that kind of workflow. So for them, MASCHINE is more or less a DAW replacement, even though MASCHINE itself isn't really a substitute for a DAW.

This isn't meant to replace the DAW - though in some cases it will for some folks, but yet give users another truly AMAZING option without depending on the DAW so much, for a lot of our productions. What this 1.6 update does though is make Maschine a viable alternative to Ableton Live's session view.

Re alternative to Live's Session View - I think this might be true with the inclusion of Kore *if* kore permits the kind of routings already possible with Live. If it does or if such routings are not needed by the user, then Maschine together with any other DAW would provide a viable Live alternative.
