How to run kontact with live

Post by Dmerricka » Wed Nov 17, 2010 2:26 am

I have been using live all the way since 4 and love it but I'm running in to some road blocks that are making me switch over to sonar because its 64bit. I use Kontact and omnisphare allot. My songs are have many instances of each. I have a very hopped up windows 7 system with 8 gigs of ram and a RME sound card. How can I run kontact outside of live because i need the ram. Any suggestions on how i can do this as I don't want to move ay from Live but badly need 64 bit.

if you do a lot of instances then try out reaper.

http://reaper.fm/

it's low overhead and for people that like running a lot of instances of kontakt it may be more helpful than freezing and switching tracks in live.

Kontakt lets you use ram outside of the host with the memory server mode, much like Omnisphere. Well at least on a mac. Are you on a PC then? This is a very useful thing about being on a mac so maybe time to switch!

Why run several instances...both vst are multi midi channel and multi audio out. I run both often at the same time and have yet to hit a memory problem

Good piont on the using kontact with its muilti midi chanel support but does that really save that much cpu as opesed to multiple instances? It's more of a ram thing reaper and sonar being 64 bit are way better then live at this but I love the live work flow and don't want all the bells and whistles of like sonar. Live should get with the times and go 64 bit! Any other suggestions would rule! I'm running 20 instances of kontact and live is chocking on it and also runs video like shit as well?

Make sure you use at least 2 instances if you going multi-midi, multi-out, so as to spread the cpu load between cores if you have a multi-core maschine. And no less instances won't really save much cpu but it will save some ram that is added by every instance. In our case it could make a difference. Especially with Omnisphere which loads an extra 140 mb of ram per instance, before any sampels or even loaded (even for the dsp synth). Kontakt is less but still probably 40-60 per instance (without the samples), not sure.

Load Kontakt as plugin into another host that can run as ReWire slave to Live (eg. Plogue Bidule).

^ this.

Using multiple instances helps you with splitting core-load, but it doesn't help you with memory. Using the memory server (you can enable it in the Kontakt settings) will load the Kontakt instrument outside Live, therefore not being bound to the memory allocated by Live.

Does anyone know if the memory server can load more than 4GB, does it somehow circumvent the 4GB limitation or does it just make additional 4GB available for the sampled instrument?

Yeah that's the point of the memory server, to access all of your ram outside of what a 32 bit host will allow. Is it available for PCs too?

Keep in mind that it will only offload the ram from the samples to outside live. The ram needed for the plug-in itself will still be used in Live and subject to Live's limits of 4gb (more like 2gb for good performance). So for example if I load 4 Omnisphere's all using memory server, it will still use about 600-700mb of ram inside live just to load the instances, while the ram for the samples in patches will be used from the system outside Live.

No. Windows doesn't permit for that form of memory management, sorry to say.

That's too bad. I take it for granted on the mac with Kontakt and Omni. Really makes the whole 64 bit thing less of an issue. It would be tough without it though.
