Live 9 + new control surface + Drum Rack update = Maschine?

Post by Leon Tricker » Thu Nov 11, 2010 11:20 pm

I'm feeling in a speculative mood.

I have a hunch that Ableton will be looking at Maschine and thinking "we need to claim some of that market!"

So, could a new dedicated controller (from Akai or Novation perhaps?) plus revamped Drum Racks, plus session view automation, be a Maschine alternative in Live 9?

Hmmm...

If it allows recording clip automation, then sure.

One thing that will never change though, is that you won't be able to to run an Ableton Live plug-in within Ableton Live. Running Maschine within Live is sweet. And now that you can use plug-ins in Maschine, it makes it easier to do full songs, and you could even have a nice tidy Ableton Live set that had each track in a different maschine instance and mix between them. That could be cool.

They should have done a dedicated controller like Maschine from the get-go instead of what they did with the APCs but none of them had the vision that NI did for what a truly "dedicated" controller can be. I have no faith in Akai to pull off something like that. Novation, perhaps... Anyway, it's not just about the full integration with the controller, although that is very key.

But like glitchrock mentioned, even with the bomb of an update NI just dropped with plugin support, Live will still has some uses together with Maschine like in his example. But for sure, many will just replace Live's session view with Maschine outright the way it's looking.

As far as dedicated controllers go, the APC40 in comparison to Maschine looks like an afterthought because, well, it was. Maschine is able to have such total integration between hardware and software because the dedicated hardware controller concept was obviously an integral part of the design of the software from the ground up.

It's going to take a complete rewrite of Live's session view to approach something like Maschine and I just don't see that happening. And sure, you could hack something together with Max4Live but I don't think people will fork over another $300 to use some hack that kinda gets close to Maschine which you can find used for that price. Ableton should spend more time fixing all the accumulated bugs and making the whole ship more stable before it does anything else.

This would be the ultimate if Akai releases a hardware MPC that works seamlessly w/ Live. So you can go into the living room mess with some beats while watching TV. Then when when House is over :D, you can go into the studio and hook it up to live. And it will some how integrated or synced. So a real hardware/software that works, truly w/ Live, a VST to others and a standalone hardware unit. That would be amazing.

Meh. It's more like the competition has been looking at Live for years and have started to implement some of it's performance features. I don't know WTF Ableton is going to do when all their competitors have implemented what used to make Live unique and have also excelled at what has been weak in Live for years.

AS a long term live fan recently blown away by the fun factor of my new maschine - I can only hope ableton get influenced by NI's innovation.

Great to be first past the post on Ni's part - but no reason for other manufacturers to not make attempts and improvements on Ni's workflow concept.

Something like an MPD 32 with the maschine style light up pads for step sequencing - displays for paramaters - and full browser control within live - As much as I love maschine that could well be a deal breaker for me. I really love both but there's a lot of duplicity between the two already. . .

All the people jizzing over Maschine: do you come from hardware/MPC backgrounds?

To me I can't figure out what the big deal with it is, but it seems like everybody and their mothers want to make sweet love to Maschine, and I'm curious what the big deal is with it.

Everyone talks about 'the workflow' - but what does that mean? The workflow for sampling songs/beats and using them to record your own? The workflow for recording/sequencing? Is it a more streamlined workflow for making EDM and hiphop beats (which I don't personally make myself, so I'm missing out on the big draw)?

I've watched videos for it, but I can't figure out what makes it as big a deal as it seems to be to everyone.

I own one and am a bit confused with the amount of fanboyism with it. It's good for some stuff sure, but I'm not sure I'd shell out again if it broke beyond repair.

i dont see the big deal either.
i guess if you are the type of person that "makes beats"
then i guess this is some use to you.
but as some one that needs real multi track recording i dont see the point.

i also never seen the point in the apc 40 nor the launch pad nor the monome.
its like a bunch of toys to me.

Haha sweet love. I like it because there is less to no mouse usage. Every thing is in front of you to work. It cant replace live on the sick sound manipulation, but for make a beat and whatnot yeah it easy.I was on it for a hour at guitar center and i went from eh to ehhhhh... i got to get this. But I'm going to wait till winter Hammers and till someone pays me for my music before spend 600 on another piece of plastic.
