Remote SL or Zero without automap

I'm using my Remote Zero SL MK1 without the Automap server. The downside: You can't control the tempo by using the designated tempo-encoder on the Remote SL, but not having to use the Automap server is more important to me. It's not that it was slow or buggy (although it does slow down Ableton Live startup a bit), but I just don't like running an extra program just to control my VSTs. Especially because you have to "convert" every plugin to its respective Automap version. And creating a midi map the old school way is not that much more time consuming.
I'm mostly in the Ableton Live Automap template which I modified a bit (e.g. capping volume faders @ 0 dB), and sometimes use templates for softsynths.
The top 8 encoders are quiet nice for quick device control, and the faders and mutes help while composing. Whish the buttons below the mutes were solos... Whatever. I'm not using it that much anymore to be honest, and I wonder if it will get obsolete when I get the Maschine, as it also has a template for basic device/mixer control and even the feature to launch clips.

I love your idea to be honest 2be. Actually, I'm more use to assign myself every fader and every knob manually than all the automatic things. For example, I'm use to assign everything on the UC-33e and even on the Akai APC-40 I don't use much of its automatic features. I'm more old school. But, if I can get my laptop/ableton live to accept manually mapping, I'll do it, but right now it doesn't do anything, the Novation ReMOTE 25SL that is.

Thanks everyone, I will try to answer to Glitchrock as much as I can in a while, I'm working right now and don't have any of my hardware here with me. I have my MacBook Pro though, so, will download the manual and see if I have something wrong in my settings.

I don't like hyping the stuff I got to justify my purchase. The Remote Zero SL is not a bad controller, but if you're into automatic mappings of Ableton Live the APC40 is the better alternative. I'd not buy it again, especially not for the 270 € I paid some years ago. While it's certainly not my dream controller, it has served me quiet well in the studio to get hands-on-control and even in a couple of DJ gigs where I used it with Traktor 3/Traktor Pro.
In terms of manual mapping, the Remote Zero SL MK1 is very nice I think. Especially because of the two displays, the very flexible MIDI editor both on the PC and the controller itself (chose between CC, (N)RPN, SYSEX, MMC, Note, Prog Change, Bank Change; limit minimum and maximum values; give controls a name and change the way they are displayed) and cheap price - you can buy them for a few bucks.
So automap aside, it's a cheap MIDI controller that you can map in any way you want, with two displays and lots of knobs and buttons. Not a bad deal at all.

Hello 2be and Glitchrock. I just found out, right now that my 12 year cousin was playing somethings with my APC40. He said when finish he tweaked ssomething but didn't specify what. Now when I open Live>Preferemces>MIDI/Sync on the Control Surface still got the drop down menu, but in the Input/Output all the Drop down menus is saying NONE. Even worse, down on the MIDI Ports is completely empty. I have a Apple MacBook Pro, can anyone help me configuring this? PLEASE, and sorry to bother guys
