A couple questions about LIve and APC-40 for DJ use

Post by paddyb » Thu Nov 18, 2010 4:05 pm

1. APC-40 users, how do you set up your EQ? Do you map out 6 device control knobs or do something else? Or do you just EQ with the mouse?

2. Can anyone recommend a good tutorial video for warping in Live 8? I have one month access to sonic academy but their DJ video is for Live 6 and the old warping system.

Thanks!

Paddy

Ableton has a good enough video posted about the new warping. It just takes a bit to get use to, but once you do it's cake.

Dont use auto warp. let the clip load, then press warp. Live will place an arbitrary maker at the beginning.

1. Start with one random marker Live places at the beginning.
2. Find the first, on the 1, beat you want to start with and place a maker there.
3. Delete the default maker Live placed.
4. Play live with the metronome on.
5. Go 1 or 2 bars down on the 1 beat, and drag the 3, 5, or 9 to it's place and drop a maker, (corresponding to bar length)
6. It should sound lined up at the beginning of the track to the metronome.
7. If it is an electronic style track, OR one that will not drift, you can usually go close to the end and try adjusting th warp a bit, drop a maker and you good. Go through the track and make sure the middle part still is lined up with your metronome.

Other tips.
Sometimes I use a perfectly timed drum beat clip as opposed to the metronome. Something simple.

If it's a track that will drift (i.e. Live bands, something not perfectly timed) You will just have to take your time warping it.

After dropping your first "on the one" maker, some tracks work better dropping makers on snares. It depends on the track. Snares also have more of a wall up front, where kicks can have a bit of attack slope.

Sometimes I warp tracks in arrangement view then cut them into pieces and make some pieces "re-pitch" and others "complex pro." Then Render it out. I only do this occasionally on loosely timed tracks like 70's Funk.

If it is a straight up electro track with perfect timing, I usually get away with 2 makers, 1 at the beginning and one at the end, and use "re-pitch"

As far as setting up EQ's on the APC40, I have tried a lot of different things. If I am just using Live, I like Hanz Pertov's APC_64_40 script. http://remotescripts.blogspot.com/p/apc-64-40.html It has a cool way of letting you use the Track Control for EQing. Also look for the Macobat script at the Native Kontrol site.

On EQing I prefer a Hi, Mid, LowMid, and Low. I like Tarekith's EQ Rack. I just feel like I like the extra tweakability there and get really good results.

Personally I prefer mapping my EQ's from top to bottom like a DJ mixer would have. But many others prefer side to side. I used to use my faders, but fader 7 has gone bad.

There are a 100 ways to map an APC40, I would just figure out what you prefer.
