Newb qu: why are tracks yellowed out/muted in arrange view?
Newb qu: why are tracks yellowed out/muted in arrange view?
I have dragged some stems bounced down in Logic into sets of tracks in session view. Each set of tracks makes up my scene/song. I do this a few times and have my setlist (for a church). All is well.
However, I'd like to (when teaching the band a new song) be able to hop about a bit inside each song. I can't see anyway of doing this in session view but figured I can drag a set of tracks into the arrange view, put a few markers in (for chorus, verse etc) and jump about to my heart's content till we've learnt it (then go back to the session view to perform the songs, deleting the arrange view stuff).
When I do this though, (I select all the tracks and drag them into the arrange view) they are all yellowed out and don't play. What am I doing wrong?! Eeek!
Thanks in advance for any help!

You're probably still in Session Mode. When you go back to arrangement view, be sure to hit F10, the Back to Arrange button, or the GUI button located between the main transport functions and the global quantization drop down. It looks like three tracks on top of each other with a right pointing arrow. You can add locators from the tob scrub areas.
From Session view, you can duplicate your tracks and change thier start point to coincide with the sections where you want to make a split and launch each scene as a separate section. If you add follow actions, you can have the song sections lead into each other.
Best of luck with the band,
Thomas.
[edit] the arrow points left, not right

Re: Newb qu: why are tracks yellowed out/muted in arrange view?
Any chance you could post a screen snapshot of the problem in Arrangement view? When you say "yellowed out" it just sounds like you've got all clips selected. That's how Live indicates a selection in Arrangement view. Unless I'm missing something from your description, I don't think the "yellowing" is part of the problem.
Are you sure you're dragging the clips all the way over to the very first measure in the arrangement, and beginning playback from there? Look at the timeline near the top of the screen. When you begin playback, there'll be a thin vertical black line sweeping from left to right across the arrangement. If you've done something like, for example, dragging a bunch of clips in and dropping them on the 33rd measure but start playback at measure one, you'll have 32 bars of silence. Just a thought...

Yes I was! (And it's just as well you said as I didn't have a clue about this!)You're probably still in Session Mode.
Blessings Thomas, you've moved us forward hugely.
Thanks, Patrick

Re: Newb qu: why are tracks yellowed out/muted in arrange view?
what is the point to be in session view ?
you should load your stems in the arrangement view and stay there !
if you want to work in the session view load each stem and duplicate them to have enough section then place start and end loop marker for each section
the session view with the scenes are useful with loops to find an arrangement that will be recorded to the arrangement view
or in the case of entire songs to mix songs to do a dj set
but in the case you want to practice you should work in the arrangement view.

Thanks for the suggestion!carrieres wrote:what is the point to be in session view ?

To be honest, I haven't quite decided which way to work yet and am very open to advice. In church praise sets, we do about 5-6 songs comprising stems for each instrument for the whole song (no separate verse, chorus, fill etc). I've liked the session view so far as I can construct a particular Sunday service by dragging in the stems to make up the scenes and setting the follow-on actions depending upon where I want to stop.
What I'd *really* like to be able to do is to have *one* footpedal switch that, after a "follow-on action" stop, advances to the next scene and automatically starts the next sequence of scenes/songs). Since I'm engaging the congregation, it has to be a footswitch and *one switch* that I can feel easily with a foot. I can't set this up in Live yet.
Someone has pointed out the up/down buttons by the stop all clips box but I still have to look to make sure the right song/scene is highlighted before pressing another pedal to launch the song. ARghh! I bet I'm missing something
All suggestions welcome.
