Re: Ableton's Operator
There's just something gross about going on the companies forum to ask such things.
Re: Ableton's Operator
well seeing as how i spent close to 500$ on ableton you would think it would come with operator

Re: Ableton's Operator
For the money it costs, I agree that they SHOULD include Operator in the regular version of Live (which doesn't have a real synth, only drum racks, simpler and impulse), whereas for the same money Cubase includes about 7 synths and Logic about 600
However, the OP should have done his research and known this type of thing ahead of buying, so I don't have too much sympathy for him.

Re: Ableton's Operator
Here in North America, Cubase is $499 dollars, Live is $499 dollars. Live Suite is $799

Are you INSANE - Cubase was the FIRST sequencer to support external effects, at least 2 years ahead of everything else, it's had that feature since SX3 way back in 2005. It has DEVICE PANELS too to software emulate the hardware controls and support for hundreds of popular synths right out of the box.
The full version of Cubase (called CUBASE 5) has EIGHT (count em) virtual instruments - These are Groove Agent One, Halion One, Mystic, Spector, Monologue, Prologue, Embracer and Loopmash. What you are quoting is the CUT DOWN Cubase Studio 5.
In the meantime, these videos confirm what I'm saying

Of course, Cubase doesn't have SESSION VIEW, which is the main prime function Ableton Live has over every other DAW, but recent developments such as Maschine, Renoise's pattern Matrix and Cakewalk cobbling Project 5 like pattern sequencers into Sonar means this advantage won't last forever.

Re: Ableton's Operator
OK, no damage done. Sorry about the use of the word insane, it's just that external instruments were one of the selling points Cubase had over Protools, Logic, Sonar and Live for a while, but I was being overly dramatic !
I know that Steinberg charge more for Cubase in Europe, something complained about quite a bit.
Operator is a better plugin than any of the Cubase synths actually too. Hence it's seperate cost I suppose, but although those Cubase synths are not exactly fantastic, they can be useful and have a lot of tweakability and low CPU overhead, Embracer is even a cool 5.1 synth which can sound amazing with a surround set up. Monologue is not a bad analogue VA. Mystic is a quirky additive/comb filter type synth and Halion One a rompler with 4GB sound content, which is close to Simpler I suppose in function (not GUI). Nothing to challenge 3rd party stuff or even Logic, but a beginner can at least do something with those without having to buy additional instruments.
The best Cubase synth was A1 which was done by Waldorf, but sadly discontinued due to licensing issues after SX3. Fortunately, I can still use it as I have SX3 and just copied it to the C5 folder (ditto Magneto, a great tape saturation plug also discontinued after SX3).

Re: Ableton's Operator
Are you sure you're not insane?
How would one know?
I've never really thought about bundled synths before. Probably cos I got started w/ Suite 7, although a friend recently started w/ Live 8 and it is quite limited in comparison. Even Pro Tools 8/9 LE came w/ a couple synths, piano, organ, and a sampler. The VA synth is actually pretty decent.
I would recommend to the OP looking into FM8 also. Operator is excellent but has just the four operators, as opposed to FM8's having, I believe, eight ops. Functions more like the Yamaha DX7 that it's modeled on, w/ dual pathway architecture. Operator is badass though. Kinda wish it, Sampler, & Analog were included in Live, with maybe some partner instruments thrown in to sweeten Suite. However this is, as they say, how they get ya.
