Need Help on Troubleshooting the Live MIDI Ports

Please, this is very important. I was setting the Griid Ableton Live 8 iPhone app controller and all of the sudden, all my MIDI Ports disappeared. Now I can't use any of my controllers I have the APC40, Novation ReMOTE 25SL and the Evolution UC-33e surface controller, none of them working right now. I'm not into "automap" crap. I do all mappings by myself, custom made for my, either production or live needs. Is there anything like a special button or command that reads "Press to Restore factory midi presets"? If not I need lots of help getting it back to normal. Just in case, I'm using Ableton Live 8.2 Suite. PLEASE HELP

Delete the Preferences.cfg file for the version you are trying to use, and re-open Live. You will find this file in the following paths:

Windows (Live 3): (Installation Directory)\Ableton\Preferences
Windows (Live 4 and laster versions) C:\Documents and Settings\your user name\Application Data\Ableton\Live\Preferences
Mac OS 9: /System/Preferences/Ableton
Mac OS X: /User/Library/Preferences/Ableton

Guys none of those are working. May I ask, could it be because I wrongly change all of my MacBook Pro's settings on the Audio MIDI Setup? Please advice

Another question, do I need the IAC Driver for this? What's that for?

From the looks of it your ports are still there but your configuration has been wiped; there is a difference

Anyway; what I'd do is to shut down Live, pull out all your midi stuff and start with only having the APC40 hooked up. Now start Live up again and check the midi preference tab.

You should now have 1 port listed at the bottom (midi port section). So this is easy; select the APC40 as a control surface at the top and make sure the rest (input/output) matches the port you have listed at the bottom.

At the bottom you need to make sure that "remote" is selected for the APC ports. For both input as output.

Once you have it all setup exit the preference screen and check if your APC works as usual. If it does exit Live again and hookup your next midi controller.

Repeat the steps I mentioned above; the new midi port should be listed in Live and this one won't be configured in the midi port section; thus should be easily identified.

As to setting up the input/output; there are a few basic rules. Now, I'm doing this from the top of my head; if you need more information I suggest you either pull up the help view (arrow at the lower left corner of the screen) or pick up the manual. With the help view open you can hoover the mouse over either column (track, sync or remote) and it will give you a heads up on the details.

But in short:

Track: Used to tell Live that midi information from this device should also be sent / made available to midi tracks. Normally used for remote instruments like midi keyboards and controllers on which you wish to generate midi note information.

Sync: Used to tell Live that it should be ready to sync its midi clock with this device. So stuff like tempo information and such.

Remote: Used to tell Live that it should expect incoming midi control messages from this device. So midi information which is used to control Live remotely.

Note: some people seem to mistakenly think that 'Sync' is also required for the APC because of the 'tap tempo' button. This is not the issue; tapping a tempo is technically no different from pressing the 'start' button for example.


So, hope this helps..

ShelLuser, somehow, after two times I restart my laptop, I follow your steps here, and guess what? Yessssss, everything is almost back to normal. Now everytime I connect a controller, will show me the options, the only thing, when I disconnect them, all Ports of those controllers will vanish. But when connected will come back, guess this is normal right? Anyway, I have learned some new lessons in that paragraph I'm quoting from you Feel very happy now!!!! Gracias, Danke!!

David Abravanel, I already contacted Tech Support but am about to write back to let them know everything's back to almost normal, thanks to all ok, also to you Noth, who helped me getting things back to normal
