Midi mapping. Midi channels being ignored
Hi there and thanks in advance for any help!
I am using Ableton 8 with my X-Station and Behringer FCB1010. The FCB sends Midi notes on Channel 2. The X-Station sends Midi Notes on Channel 1. I have mapped notes from the Behringer FCB1010 to trigger various samples. My problem is that when I'm trying to play the X-Station as an instrument Ableton is setting off samples. I looked into it and notice that the notes I'm playing on the X-Station are the same as those being sent by the FCB1010. However, they are being sent on different channels, so my expectation is that a command mapped to E1 on midi channel 2 shouldn't be triggered by E1 on midi channel 1. But that's what's happening.
I've tested this out, by mapping notes from the X-Station. The Midi Map list clearly shows that these notes are on Channel 1 but the ones I've mapped from the FCB1010 are on channel 2.
Any thoughts?
Cheers,
Alan

Hi, have you specified which channel each track in your set should be receiving MIDI from? Otherwise the default is to accept MIDI from all inputs.

Hi David,
Thanks for your reply.
To clarify, the problem is not with Midi Tracks, it is with Midi Mapping. All tracks in my set are audio tracks.
Can you confirm that a command (for instance play) mapped to note E1 on channel 1 should only be triggered by the note E1 on channel 1 and not by the note E1 on channel 2? This is what I have experienced.
Cheers,
Alan

Hi, this issue is likely that you are sending note messages, not control signals - check in MIDI map mode and see if the controls that are mapped are distinct.

Re: Midi mapping. Midi channels being ignored
Hi Dave,
Indeed I am sending midi note messages from the fcb. Still my hope was that a control mapped to a midi note on channel 2 would not be triggered by the same midi note on a different channel. Surely that's what midi channels are for?
If I go through the dull process of programming every pedal on the fcb1010 to send cc messages inatead of notes, how can i ensure that these do not conflict with cc messages from the x station? Are cc messages channek dependant?
Thanks,
Alan

Re: Midi mapping. Midi channels being ignored
Hi albinogovan,
No problem here with that.
(Mapped C1 on midi channel 1 to a clip and now this note (C1) starts the clip. Then had changed the midi channel of my keyboard to channel 2 and now the clip did not start when depressing this note).
Are you sure that you mean midi channel and not midi port? -
(checked this with Live 8.2.1 and also the newest beta on a Mac with OSX - 10.5.6) -
Which Live version did you use exactly and which operating system?
regards, palmer

Hi Palmer,
Thanks for the thought. I'll check it out when I'm next at home. Not totally sure of the difference between midi port and channel so that's definately a possibility!

Re: Midi mapping. Midi channels being ignored
Hi Alan,
A Midiport is a physical or virtual Midi In- or Out-put. Every port can send/receive on 16 midi channels.
(for instance I have a "M-Audio Axiom 25" keyboard with two Midi In Ports -> one Port is the keyboard itself and the second port is a connector at the back of the keyboard for external equipment <- and one Midi out Port -> a second connector at the back of the keyboard <- For the keyboard itself I can choose at which channel it will transmit the notes - or other events.)
In your case the X-Station and the FCB are individual ports but may send on the same Midi Channel?
Hope this could help a bit.
cheers, palmer

Re: Midi mapping. Midi channels being ignored
Hi Palmer,
Thanks for the potential lead and for the explanation.
However, the two devices were definitely sending midi notes on different channels. This was apparent from the list of mid mappings, which clearly state the channel number in the first column.
Since I had this problem it has actually not recurred and I have not been able to recreate it, so fingers crossed it was just a random anomaly. It would be interesting to hear whether anyone else has experienced the same...

Re: Midi mapping. Midi channels being ignored
OK, I figured it out and it turns out I was just being a complete fool!
I somehow managed to map the master scene launch buttons to several keys on the x-station, so when I played a synth part it would (in my my perception randomly) launch clips which I knew I'd mapped to different pedals. I proceeded to get mighty confused and wrongly diagnose the problem.
Sorry for wasting everyone's time with this muppetry!

Thanks for letting us know what the solution was, though! I appreciate seeing what kinds of things other people are doing with Live and it definitely makes these threads more interesting reading
