Monitor positioning advice?
Re: Monitor positioning advice?
In many studios i ve build or helped to build we often used products from K&M
because they actually was reasonable priced for a professional quality..
http://www
for example their laptop stand is 50 euro and it dont needs acable binder to dont collaps.
I just realized that the expensiv one in the earlier post is a K&M aswell. 2 years ago i installed a surround system with theese..when the stay all around in a room the looks are more important i guess...
but they have much cheaper ones that are good allready...

Re: Monitor positioning advice?
and regarding all the decoupling cult..
when we build studios i buy some special industrial dampening material that is garantied to hold its elastic propertys for 30 years... around 20-30 euros the smallest piece you can get.... and put little paads under the speakers..and this only matters for subs and bass heavy speakers.. but thats the professional choice.. in the home studio market you can use the cheaper foams that get hard after some years... its really funny to see this products popping up that dont even consider better materials than stadard foam.. but ok.. the industrial stuff is so strong that the pads get so small that you really cant sell them for a high price.. you dont even see them when the speaker is placed..where to put your company logo?
beside that its questionable wether small nearfields really need more decoupling than some soft scotch pads..
.
so dont spend more money on decoupling bull than on the stands itself..
an regarding your shelf.. i dont know how this things looks but a shelf is acoustical active... you probably need some absorbation between the boards around the speaker when you really go for the shelf option.

Any places you recommend in Berlin for checking out stands before buying...? Sound&Drumland/justmusic doesn't have that much on their website and I try to avoid them if I can based on past experience...
Re: Monitor positioning advice?
Right... I'm not going to spend a cent on decoupling the speaker from its base - relying on the isopods to do that.3phase wrote:...beside that its questionable wether small nearfields really need more decoupling than some soft scotch pads..

It's this type:3phase wrote:an regarding your shelf.. i dont know how this things looks but a shelf is acoustical active... you probably need some absorbation between the boards around the speaker when you really go for the shelf option.

i.e. light and airy, no solid back or sides, but too light - one person can easily lift and carry the whole unit. The cross-braces help stability, but what it needs is some weight.
With the speakers positioned at the front edge of the shelf, so the that their cabinet is a bit in front of the shelf's corner posts, there's about 20cm between the back of the speaker and the wall behind.
Re: Monitor positioning advice?
no.. i allways ordered from K&H directly.8O wrote: Any places you recommend in Berlin for checking out stands before buying...? Sound&Drumland/justmusic doesn't have that much on their website and I try to avoid them if I can based on past experience...
and why do you need them so high? you can work standing when you give them the wright angel to point to your head..
50 cm are easy to cover with that.. thats maybe 10-15 degrees upward pointing..

Re: Monitor positioning advice?
I reckoned I need them that high because I'm *always* working standing. Guess I can angle them.
But 15 degrees will need almost 2 metres distance to hit 50cm height, if my trigonometry serves me well.

Re: Monitor positioning advice?
i thought you wanted wide stereo field? and you dont need to point the tweeters direct to your ear when you are a little distant.. so yore real disance is rather 1,50m8O wrote:I reckoned I need them that high because I'm *always* working standing. Guess I can angle them.

why not just get a wider shelf? and deeper too.. something from an industrial source from metal and acoustic foam to dampen the relevant boards?
besides..when you are vose enough 80 cm between the speakers can be enough..you yout need to position them wright..
nearfield can be actually pretty near when you have good speakers.your neigbors will love that
