Beatrepeat and looper dont quite achieve what i want. I guess what im really after is the way the roll effect on the djm-800 will automatically start the repeat at the correct place and catch the beat right everytime
Does the effect-on button on the DJM800 get quantized then? If so, as far as I can see, that's the only difference with it and setting the Beat Repeat to Chance=0%, mapping a knob to Grid and a button to the Repeat button and the mode to Insert. This way just means you have to know how Beat Repeat works a bit better and when to press the button.

I love quite a few of the things you can do with Pioneer effects. And I really wish I could implement them into Live, such as the feedback looping functionality on the EFX's. Pioneer should make an EFX VST!!!

To do feedback loop fx, you need to have a Delay or Looper in a Return channel that is fed into itself 100%.

It gets messy when you assign appropriate keys and quantization. and trying to figure out which fx you want available to you in advance. With the something like Simple Delay you would have wet to 100, and feedback to 0%. The reason why I would suggest Looper instead is that Simple Delay only gives you up to one bar of delay. Using the Looper, you can adjust the routing settings and then use the multiply/divide buttons for getting nice long or short cuts. (although i don't think it can cut between beat divisions nearly as flexibly!). Oh, and if you were to use Simple Delay, i'd keep it on the default mixer setting so that it doesn't jumble-pitch all your stuff as you jump around to different amounts of quantization.

..so I guess it isn't QUITE there, but you can get close!

Hmm... Interesting. Thanks very much for this suggestion. :)

Do you have or have you used a Pioneer EFX machine? I have the 500 and love it but would like to be able to do some of the tricks I do with it inside Ableton.

Do you know by any chance how I might be able to map each time increment to a different button (on an APC40 if it helps)?

Thanks again! :D

And I've just tried it. Amazing. Love it. Just to map buttons to be the different note increments...

On a note more closely related to the thread, if you set this up using a Beat Repeat, it might be the way the OP wanted to get that roll effect, though the previous suggestions of mapping a button for the repeat and another controller to the grid work too, just in a different way.

You can map a button range to the delay increments. For example, I'd switch on the Link button (to ensure that both channels will have the same effect), then on channel 8 of the APC, hold down the top and then bottom clip launch buttons. This would tell Ableton Live that all notes in that range are increments of the parameter. Next you could set the min max appropriately, that way you can try to avoid 3rds or whatever :)

And I do not own any of that equipment, but I've seen James Zabiela demoing his techniques on youtube. I thought to myself "Grr, I want that.. wait a second, maybe I can mimic that :P" This was at a time when Looper was not out yet, so I was limited to Simple Delay. His techniques sound really good when he gets to use 2 or 4 bars to give consistency and variation to his mangling. At only one bar, it gets kinda blech, but it is still fun to catch a beat in the loop and do wacky shit to it on the fly haha (watch out for feedback!) I have not tried this with Looper, I should give it a play :)

Yeah, I definitely agree that just using one bar can get boring quickly, for obvious reasons. Until I quickly tried it out, I was going to post a Zabiela video to check that your suggestion was the same thing that I meant. He's pretty amazing at that kind of stuff. And yes, even though I do have the EFX500, I still wanted to be able to do it in Ableton. The EFX machines are definitely fun to use and, I would say, worth the money, as expensive as they are.

And oh my god! I never knew you could map buttons on the APC40 like that! You're truly a godsend, Mr. Die4! Thank you so much. Do you know off hand if that would work to map the clip stop buttons? So from track 1's stop to track 8's stop. My amateur guess is that it wouldn't because I believe the APC works by transmitting its tracks on different MIDI channels. But it might work still. Not sure how Ableton deals with it.

But anyway, thank you again. :D
