New dubstep & techno magazine: Modus

Post by Alex-C » Mon Dec 06, 2010 9:57 pm

Well it's been a long time in the making (over a year now I think) but we've finally managed to pull together the first issue.

Modus is a magazine aimed at the deeper end of dubstep and techno - with an emphasis on editorial and content that provokes discussion, as opposed to just reviews.

http://www.modusmag.co.uk

The first issue has...
A brief new-talent showcase, an article on the possible future of MySpace for artists, an exclusive interview with dub-techno don Quantec, an exclusive interview with Egoless, a huge guide for sending dubs and tracks to people, a revealing interview with Bob Macc on mastering, an interview with new talent Jack Dixon and a piece on the biggest photographer and design team in dubstep, Stuart Hammersley of Give Up Art and photographer Shaun Bloodworth.

Right now we're selling the magazine through MagCloud - a print-on-demand service, who cover delivery and costs.
You can have your own copy printed and delivered for $12. although it's only $9.15 till the end of December

You can also purchase a PDF copy for just $2

Enjoy!

Fair enough if it's not your bag - I can understand that.

Still - for anyone else, it's now available as a PDF download too. Just $2.

Sounds cool. Especially the fact that its dubstep/techno. Cool things happen when you blend the two.
Just some constructive critisism though- you should have some articles on the blog to entise people to buy the mag.

For example, the price of 2$ isnt the issue, more of the issue is the fact that i have to go through the whole payment routine to grab the mag.
What kind of interviews?
Production tips?
Show coverage?
Album/mp3 reviews....

I know what you mean, but if you could grab it before you pay - then it would just be free for download.

I toyed with putting up a blog, or giving one article away for free as a demo - but I think if we get more issues, we'll have more fodder to play with.

You can at least preview some images of the magazine now - I put up 8 screens of the pages, to give people a better idea of what they're getting.

What I want to know is who the hell is in charge of creating and organizing the names of all these electronic pop music styles/genres/sub genres???

+1 to Mike's constructive criticism.
Best of luck, but charging for a first issue with a few small pictures to entice doesn't work for me, regardless of what the content is.

The site is blocked at my work so I can't check what the preview is, but perhaps give partials of the content with "buy to read more" links.

Great to see you have an interview with Bob Macc in there. Good guy all around, and absolute studio genius.

Totally - and a pretty insightful interview too. I spent a while asking people what they would ask a mastering engineer given the chance - and tried to ask as many of the relevant ones as possible. I figured mastering was a bit mysterious, so worth shedding a bit of light on!
