Cubase + Ableton Rewire Question: "Slice To New Midi Track"

Hi,

Cubase 4 as main sequencer, Ableton Live 8 mainly as loop and audio manipulator.

Question question for those that are familiar with both programs:

I'm using them together through Re-Wire and would like to slice audio to new midi
track in Ableton, and somehow be able to manipulate those midi slices in Cubase
using Cubase's step designer.

Is this possible, and what would the routing for this be? I've tried going back
to Cubase and setting the midi output to the same channel as the loop being sliced
in Ableton but I do not hear any audio output.

Am I missing something here?

there is no way for Cubase to control your Drum Rack in live, sorry. Slice To Midi effectively creates a Drum Rack containing all the samples cut from the loop (each housed in a simpler instrument inside the drum rack). Cubase 5 has the ability to send Midi messages outside itself, to other programs, but Cubase 4 does not. I run Cubase 5 but have never needed to test that functionality, so I'm not sure how / if it would work with the drum racks...

Also maybe worth mentioning that Cubase 5 can slice-to-midi as well, just like Live does (though you have to manually load the slices into Groove Agent One), but again with version 4 I think you are out of luck there, it might slice loops but there is no groove agent...

I have a question for you though, since you are using Live in ReWire mode with Cubase -- when using the Session view, what happens if you click a record button on a clip slot that doesn't currently have a clip in it? It -should- just start recording a new clip, as it would in non-Rewire mode, but I've been trying this lately with Cubase 5 and in rewire mode Live only lets me record clips in session view if I first create a blank clip, and then record into it...if I just click the session slot, nothing happens....very annoying. Let me know if you can...

Yeah I guess this needs some clarification about what the OP's problem actually is. My post is a bit confusing I realize too; obviously Cubase can send midi messages through rewire to Reason, for example, to play Reasons instruments and have their audio input into Cubase with Midi messages going out from Cubase. But, with Live Rewire I think you can just basically have audio channels receiving audio...not sure you can send midi messages into it's devices but I'm going to check this out.

YES, of course this works...but again, I'm not sure what the OP really is trying to do. But, you can create a midi channel in Cubase and in the "midi to" box, any devices loaded into Live will be available...

hey guys,

Thanks for the heads up. I've been away from the studio the past few days, but I also believe it should work, based on applying the same principal to other "Re-Wire modules".

I'm not sure why it didn't work on Live instruments, but it certainly does for Reason instruments. I will go back and
check to see if I applied some erroneous settings and get back to you guys with my findings
