MicroKorg arpeggiator midi sync issue!

Post by NPC » Thu May 14, 2009 12:47 pm

so here's the problem..i have ableton sending midi clock to the MK..recognized, no problem. as i press play -having tweaked a bit the latency compensation for the midi out from live- i get an arp "perfectly"in sync. if i dont touch the mk patch the clock look robust, doesn't drift. BUT when i change preset on the microkorg everything goes to s**t! that is, it is still receiving the tempo but it is no longer aligned with the first beat of the bar; more precisely, it aligns randomly so you can clearly see on the step seq for example that the first beat is played between 6th and 7th step..this is annoying as i need to sync it pretty much just for the arp thing.
btw i also have an emx and when i sync it in live no probs.
just wondering if someone has some hint..-maybe get a better synth 8O but then am i sure i would not have this issue?anyway..no money in my pocket right now so i would like to fix this..thanks in advance

I'm having similiar issues with syncing the microKorg to Live 8. I want the arps to run in time with my Live tempo. If it is being triggered out of Live it is fine and everything syncs up in time. But when I try to play the MK to find a cool patch, it doesn't work or the tempo is so slow on the arp. Make sense?

I need to have the MK read the tempo from Live, but I still need to be able to play through patches and hear what they sound like in time.

Any thoughts?

that's the nature of hw synths man...
use quantized clips to change programs...is what I can offer you...
there's a bank/sub-bank/program option on every midi clip ...
choose the preset and trigger it by triggering the clip.

I found this, dunno if it's applicable.

i'm just starting to try and get the microkorg sync'd with ableton too.

now I need to find an application like Midi yoke for the mac..

hope this helps at all, cause i'll be back here trying to get my setup working..

Does it not work if you just change 'key sync' to on? (Arpeg B knob 3)

what hardware are you using to send the clock to the korg? a cheap midi interface could be just as much of a problem as live or the korg here.

1) Make sure that a MIDI cable is sending the signals from Ableton to MK
2) Go to the MIDI section in MK by using one of the knobs ( the option is present right before global ..)
3) Use the third knob on top ( first knob is -- cutoff -- second knob is resonance etc etc)
4) Twist the 3rd knob until the display reads Auto or EXT.

-- now your arpeggiator is synced to the external clock of ableton

When you play music is ableton - you should see the tempo light blink on each beat -- this means you have done things right.
Simple check : take a kick beat = layer it 4X4 == see the light blick on each beat.

Zombie thread!

OP's problem is with arp sync not midi clock.

Arpeggiators and sequencers work differently when it comes to MIDI synchronization.

A sequencer uses start/stop and song position pointer messages to make sure that each beat is in the right spot on both the master and slave.

Some arpeggiators can respond to start/stop but none of them have a concept of beats in a bar so you as the performer must still play the keys at the right time.

Off by a 1/32 note? Well the pattern will stay locked in tempo but remain offbeat by 1/32 note. That's just the nature of the beast.

yeah i normally just get it as close as possible, record to audio, possibly warp if it is too far out of line.

if its for live just gotta play with/around the limitation

if just for playback sync issues of midi clips

(I FIRST..)
-put sync and track on in the midi output preferences (on input I only put track)
-set the output and input buffer latency of live
-Put my korg midiclock to ext or auto (preferably ext)

NOW for sync

press the D icon in Live on the far right side underneath the scrollbar. track delay options per track appear in ms or smpls.

put your latency time in the midi track sending notes to your microkorg. (do this before enabling the arp. and try not the change this much later on, especially not during playback)

now when arping your midi stays synced while playing back and looping (note with looping: no extra offset like with midiclock delay)

also note that when playing back a midiclip the fist note of your midiclip will sometimes not trigger , at least at the first pass of your loop.
therefor start your playback a bar or 2 before your midiclip when playing/recording. => this also helps against other sync offset issues.

cheers
