the opening of a ...
parking garage? At the freaking Hard Rock Cafe in Hollywood Florida! WTF! This is just wrong on so many levels. The casino is owned by the Seminole tribe of Indians. Aren't they supposed to stand for harmony with nature? How many trees were cut down to make the nearly two thousand acoustic guitars? It gets even worse, they're going to donate the broken guitar bits to disabled artists so they can make "guitar art"! Oh, and Guiness was on hand to document the pathetic display.
"
Casino VIPs, ...and members of the Seminole Tribe of Florida took part in the group event that smashed 1,914 acoustic guitars.
The event marked the grand opening of the Hard Rock's Winner's Way parking garage."
Here's the
slide show.

Wow, what a shame. Just think of all the students & beginners those instruments could have been donated to...

Well if whoever came up with that ws a disgruntled keyboard player then I could have understood it if they were electric guitars.. but accoustics?

I assume they were Esteban guitars returned by disgruntled QVC buyers, so no worries.

I dunno, at least there is a charitable connection to this event. I find this way less ridiculous than when a band like NIN smashes up their keyboards on stage just to look angsty for their teen fans.
I have no problem with a few thousand people smashing guitars if it has anyone thinking about spending time with disabled children. I don't think the "guitar art" is what that's about. It's the time spent with the kids to make it.
But when I watch NIN smash up keyboards for no reason I sort of want to choke a bitch.
also, Esteban ftw!

More context:
snip HOLLYWOOD, Fla. (December 10, 2010) – In celebration of the grand opening of Winner’s Way Parking Garage on December 15, the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino will create an unprecedented and spectacular ceremonial guitar smash of 2,400 acoustic guitars, which are not “musician quality.” The event will be documented and recorded for the Guinness Book of World Records as the “World’s Largest Guitar Smash,” with a representative of the Guinness Book on site to observe and certify the event.
snip
In true rock-star style, Hard Rock’s grand openings are deemed official with a signature guitar smash and complemented by a donation to local charities, children and musicians in need. As part of this ceremony, Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino will donate guitars worth $50,000 to the music programs of public schools in Miami-Dade County, Broward County and Palm Beach County. The funds will be used to purchase a new guitar for every public and charter school in all three counties.
In addition, the smashed guitar pieces will be contributed to the Ann Storck Center of Plantation, where adults with disabilities will be able to create original sculptures, decorative home accents and other works of art as part of the Ann Storck Center Fine Art program. The artwork will be available for purchase as “Smashed GuitART;” all proceeds will help support the fine art program to enable Ann Storck Center residents to continue to discover abilities and build independence.”snip
I still think it's wasteful and stupid and sends the message that breaking instruments = good.

"Hard Rock" cafe......
Smash 2000 fake guitars then hop back into your mini-van.
Perfect.
