Goddamnit.... can't seem to find a looped sample's tempo!
Hi guys
I have this looped sample and I want to adjust the song's tempo, so that the sample start hits every beat (if this makes any sense)
I've tried warping and tapping, plus adjusting the tempo little by little, but it always seems to fall out of tempo.
Is there any technique - other than those mentioned - I can use to find the exact tempo the loop is in?
If it helps, I can upload the loop.

chances are it's the loop itself that that's a bit off and thats why it drifts.

method 1. tap tempo button in time with sample. sorry, you've tried tapping
method 2. Get sample. Put it into simpler create a 1 bar clip that plays middle c. Play that clip and adjust tempo until the first bar of the loop is playing seamlessly. This is what I do.
method 3. the worst method. work out length of loop in seconds and work out how many beats are in that loop. From this you can work out beats per minute.

You're right. That's most likely the case.tempus3r wrote:chances are it's the loop itself that that's a bit off and thats why it drifts.

method 1 - tried, and still unprecise. I usually get around 92 BPModdstep wrote:method 1. tap tempo button in time with sample. sorry, you've tried tapping

method 2 - The loop is a sample, I've manipulated in simpler.
method 3 - seems to be the only way, as I see it, just wanted to know if there was a smart "technical" way of doing it.

Hi So-Fi,
Start the loop at 492 milliseconds with a tempo of exact 92 BPM and set the loop length to 4 bars.
done
cheers, palmer

this assumes the loop is the correct length and accurate to begin with. It's not.Palmer Eldritch wrote:Hi So-Fi,

Just look at the waveforms, manually drag the tempo of the loop until bit fo waveform line up 4 ableton bars later, play it with a click and tweak till it loops perfectly.
I got it at 91.86bpm and yes it drifts by a bit.

Nothing to see here - move along!

Re: Goddamnit.... can't seem to find a looped sample's tempo!
As I mentioned above, for me it looped proper as a 4 bar length loop with 92 BPM (sample - and loop - start point at 492 ms).
- but also with 91.86 it is sounding quite good

I'm new to ableton and it's a little bit fiddly, but once you figure the above method out, it works really well. Also helps to then put the metronome on while adjusting the length of the clip to fit into one bar, to really hear how (if) it grooves.

Re: Goddamnit.... can't seem to find a looped sample's tempo!
what if the sample is warped correctly but the loop is not set exactly at x bars? It's something that could be easily overlooked if you're new to it.
