major syncing issues

Post by thejone » Wed May 25, 2005 2:31 pm

Still having major dilemas syncing my friends PC laptop running XP and my Tibook 867 running Tiger.
Is there any one out there who regularly gigs with a similar setup.
We run whole tracks and clips, the tracks are re-pitched and the clips are stretched.
Got some major gigs coming up and would really love to make this is a reliable concept.
Cheers

y'know, i've never synched to another person using Live but i use midi sync in Live to lock up to people usisng hardware sequencers all the time and have never had a problem.

are you using midi clock or MTC? are you not able to sync at all or are you falling out of phase?

Yeah the hardware end of things is fine.
I've been doing Live and hardware setups for 2 years or so but everytime I've connected 2 Lappys with Ableton they drift horribly out of time after a couple of minutes.
If anyone is is using 2 Laptops successfully I'd really really love to get some help from you.

not laptops...
but i sync live on my PC desktop to protools on my g4 tower.
i use MTC. it stays in sync, granted, i'm doing 30 second tv commercials.
live does some strange things when set to external. i have warp issues sometimes
and if i open a new song i have to play a second or two before i set it to EXT
if i don't it plays twice as fast. CRAZY

I'm Going to try an external source like an MPC or some other kind of hardware sequencer.
Hopefully someone at the ableton team can shed some light on my dilemma.
Thanks for the replys

it's all about making one master & one slave ,once your pc & ibouk are able to send & receive midi time codes you just need to configure them & press the right buttons .

Ok I thanks for the replys but, "I know how to sync the two machines"
They just wont stay in time for extended periods, like 2 hours of DJing.
I've been a live user since day one, it's been around the world as backing for live shows without the slightest glitch., but the 2 laptop setup has never really worked.
So I'd Love to hear only from people who actually use two laptops running Live successfully.
And to everyone else who didn't read the thread properly thanks anyway.

From my experience, I've found that Live never actually outputs reliable MTC. It just wavers all over the place.

I hope Ableton have someone looking at the issue of Syncing..because it will become more and more popular as more people start working together.

For that matter, syncing technology is too old, where is the replacement? Where is the leadership in the field?

I have successfully synced my G5 tower with my tibook 867 using apple's networking feature in the audio midi setup in Tiger, and I must say i had it running for a couple of hours and it was very solid.
I still the issue that my friend has a PC and that's what I need to Sync with, so in a way I'm no better off, but for those who are intersted the LAN system seems to work well.

I'm not at all pleased with the sync from live - it's awful.

I had my schaltwerk up and running perfectly in sync for quite a while, a few days back - live as the master. Then I activated the Live feature that transmit midi feedback to midi controllers. As soon as I turned a knob in live the clock hiccuped so badly that it would have been impossible to use it in performance.

The thing is; the clock and the controller weren't even on the same midi interface, so there must be some major issues with lives midi buffering or something.

oh, and fyi: ext. sync works well with my mahine, and I've had sync up and running from my pc to noisetonepause's mac without glitches. For me it's just the master clock in live that sucks *ss.

Something like that here too...

Post by tomperson » Fri May 27, 2005 12:43 pm

The other day I used live as master, and another LAPTOP as slave, running Reason. Whenever I added a new track or effect, I would get a small drift in midi timing, that would last for a couple of seconds...

And syncing to traktor...nevermind, that's almost impossible...but that's probably traktor's fault...
Turn up the radio. Turn up the tape machine. Look into the sunset up ahead. Roll the windows down for a better taste of the cool desert wind. Ah yes. This is what it's all about. Total control now.
