APC20 confusion

Post by MarcAaron » Mon Dec 20, 2010 5:45 am

I've just purchased my 1st control surface, the Akai APC20, and plugged it into my MacBook Pro running Live 8.0. I'm having trouble getting Live to recognize the controller properly. According to the (very sparse) printed setup instructions, I should go into the Midi Sync preferences tab and select "APC20" as the Control Surface, Input, and Output.

However, the APC20 only appears as an option under Input and Output. There's no APC20 option under Control Surface. The closest thing I see is "APC40. Predictably, the controller won't work this way. None of the Clip Launch buttons turn amber to show clips are loaded, it won't launch clips, etc.

If the issue was lack of support for the APC20 in the version of Live I'm running, then the APC20 shouldn't be showing up as an option under Input and Output, right? Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

OK, I answered my own question... a software update fixed the problem.

Amazingly, Live 8.0.x supports the APC20 as an Input and Output device in the MIDI setup but NOT as a Control Surface.

Upgrading to 8.2.0, I now find the APC20 listed as a choice in the Control Surface dropdown. All is well now. (And this is one cool little toy :-)
