Ensoniq ESQ-1 Help!

Post by Quirk » Sat Dec 18, 2010 7:09 am

I've got an ESQ-1 and it's just about my favorite synth ever. Today I when I fired it up, the sound output was ultra-quiet even with the slider set at full volume. MIDI output is fine, as is the fuse, batter, interface, and everything else as far as I can tell. It serviced top to bottom a month ago or so. All my favorite patches are on it and I'm a couple weeks away from finishing the soundtrack for a show, so I'm super bummed. Does anyone know what might have caused this?

I plugged in a volume pedal to the pedal/cv input and it seems to be able to control the volume, so perhaps the problem is the volume slider itself, though it seems to function perfectly as long as the volume pedal is plugged in and set to full volume.

I started with the SQ8l vst and loved it. I couldn't use it as easily when I switched to mac and spent forever searching for an alternative before I wandered into a local music shop and saw my ESQ-1 on a shelf, in perfect condition (until now?) for $200. I bought it on the spot and its been incredible.

might you have something sending cc7 to it? if it works with the pedal up, it's almost as if it had received a CC7=0 message somewhere.

I've only ever sent MIDI to the ESQ-1 a couple of times. It was always from an instance of External Instrument in Live, so I could sequence out a part and then capture the audio from the ESQ-1. I just looked through the MIDI settings on the ESQ-1 and noticed that under "MODE=", where I should be seeing the options OMNI, POLY, MULTI and MONO, I now see OGRAM, AL PR, NTERN, and OAD I. I get the feeling there's something touching metal inside the keyboard that shouldn't be.

Yeah, I've tried a standard cable, short patch cable, and headphones on both inputs. Nothing seems to help. I just opened it up and had a look inside hoping to see something blatantly out of place. Unfortunately/Fortunately it's one of the cleanest keyboards I've ever seen inside and out.

maybe try a factory reset? save your patches first:

I booted it up this morning to get my patches off and try a reset, and was reading online when the screen blinked a couple of times and they displayed only the word "intq" at the far top left of the display. I let it sit for a while like that and after a few minutes it switched to just "int". I can reset and it's fine but I assume it's just going to do the same thing after a while.
