Another alternative is if any orphaned meter bridge sold on ebay could be tweaked to work with a rack mixer like the Roland m240r... hmmm.

Reinventing the wheel? If you want the 24 tracks and the meter bridge w/o spending a shitload of money, get a used Mackie 24 w/ meter bridge. When I read minimal, I was thinking more like a Mackie 802. 24 tracks w/ meter bridge for all tracks seems rather far from minimal. I'd go for that speck and use some decent monitors at good levels and my ears for clipping if it has to be external mixer. I would think you'd want EQs since you're sending a mixed stereo pair from 24 tracks into Live since you would end up only being able to EQ the submix.

Unlike the Tascam in the picture, the Mackie 24 channel mixers won't fit into my rack. The tiny Zoom R24 might sit nicely on top, though. Just where my Behringer 3242 used to sit. I'm not too crazy about the fact that the R24's volume LEDs are only 4 segment, but hey, I said minimal, I got minimal. :D

I know mixer EQ may seem necessary to many people, but I must admit I never, ever used it. I'm such a keyboard wonk, if I want to fine tune the sound of one of the 'boards, I just edit its patch parameters. More sonic control (and creative options) than any mixer EQ will ever offer. And once the take with the layered keyboards is on a Live track, there's all the Live EQ I could ever want...

Dangg! The Zoom R24 has only 8 physical inputs.
Back to the drawing board...

Ableton’s engineers are hard
at work developing code that will allow our software to predict the future, but we don’t
anticipate having this available until at least the next major release.

Thank you for your suggestions. After a lot of searching around (and looking at $$$$ gear), I think this falls the closest to what I was looking for:

Image

It's only 16 input channels, not 24 as I needed, but I guess I can always submix my least important 8 channels on a second unit like this, @ $159 each...

Congrats on the new mixer.

Let me know how you like the Tascam - maybe a mini-review. It's an interesting model, & I've been curious about it. Thanks!

Will do, it's on the way already. On the fun side, my dead Behringer MX3242X mixer

Image

is reportedly fixed, too! (A bad 17V regulator on the PS...) So now I'll have the 16-track Tascam as my master mixer, and the 42-input Behringer as the slave... :-)
FYI: final cost of mixer repair: $131.87. Cost of Parcel Post shipping: $52 each way. Total: $235.87, if you ever need to weigh whether to fix one of these.

I only cropped the third trackball out of the shot so I don't look extra ballsy.
(If I also confess I lost at least five trackball marble balls by now behind my rig, there will be balls jokes till the morning.)
