Distractions (when making music)
Re: Distractions (when making music)
I fought with my wife for years about getting internet at home, since we both had day jobs with plenty of time to get online. I knew it would be a distration, and it definitely is. More so than I even feared. These days if I need to get some music done, I literally unplug the router downstairs, and hide my iPhone. Helps a lot.
A studio to yourself with a door that closes helps a lot with the GF issue, though I whole-heartedly agree that you need to get a girl in the scene or who understands you need time for your art. I got lucky, mine has a degree in audio engineering, though she never uses it anymore.

Yea I always try and disconnect from the Internet. Ps3 is always a distraction though. But usually when I get distracted with the Internet it's usually about something music related, so sometimes it can be productive.
And yea, girlfriends need to be well trained into understanding 'my music time'.

Re: Distractions (when making music)
I use the internet as a way to break myself of focusing to hard. Focusing and overthinking causes me to create aural mud. As I'm girlfriendless, that is not a distraction. I drink a couple pots of coffee a day and am up ever 15 minutes or so moving around which has, oddly enough, become part of my flow. The only distraction I have is when I have headphones on because I always think the telephone may ring.

My GF is well trained to suit my music production. She leaves me alone if i want her to etc.. But there is always the "Could you turn that down!!? You have listened the same loop over and over again for the last 5 frikkin hours!! And btw. IT SOUNDS LIKE SHIT!!

^^^^^ yea it must sound awful to anyone who isn't you when your tweaking a single sound for ages, getting it just the way you want. It must look like your experiencing some sort of repetitive syndrome. I'm usually bobbing my head along to some obscure sound that usually sounds awful. Always takes me too long to realise it as well.
Re: Distractions (when making music)
Internet is the biggest distraction for me, although I am usually checking to see if any of the music library's I've been working with have updated my music - waiting is so hard ...
Someone else mentioned staying up till 5 am - at least I'm not that bad, I only stay up till 2 or 3 am ... everyone is asleep and its quiet and I can to a lot of mixing and edits.
Another distraction is reading the manual - I would much rather experiment and come up with something new and interesting without having to bother with reading! But then again, there are so many things that are new to me.
Fun thread!

My Distractions:
1. Internet
2. Video Games and TV
3. My wife and family and work
4. Configure and optimize my setup, and be a gear-junkie
wich i try to escape for a while now.
it seems i have a prototype wife too - she always lets me
do things i want for my self. maybe because we talk enough
and want the other to feel good.
