Ableton and Recording Automation

Post by Nephew » Thu Jan 06, 2011 1:59 am

So I've penciled in some automation myself on a track, and now I want to go through the track once again and record some more automation on other parameters on the fly. The issue I'm having is now it's recording over the previous automation I penciled it. I have over dub on and it's still recording over the previous automation.

Any help or suggestions on how to get around this?

If you want to change a parameter other than what you have already set, single click the parameter and a red line should appear in the track. Pencil in from there. Any parameters with automation you have already set will have a little red square on the control of the parameter itself, be it dial or fader. If you are planning on setting automation on the fly (live), the easiest way is to assign whatever parameter you want to automate via a physical dial or fader before recording. Preset these by pressing 'Ctrl + m', clicking the desired parameter control then turning or sliding the dial or fader you want to use. Press 'Ctrl + m' again. After this you can move the dial or fader and watch what it does. Start recording and you have on the fly control.

I understand everything you said, the problem was when I already have automation on a parameter and then I try to do a second play through and record it on a new parameter, the original gets over written.

I found out that you don't have to record arm the track to record automation, just have to hit the record button in the transport. Now you can record automation with out it recording over what you've previously done.
