Building Drums

Post by DanRxDrums » Fri Jan 07, 2011 10:23 pm

I'm trying to figure out how to build drums with 8 specific sounds I want. The only thing I've done make separate clips for each (i.e. bass, hats, etc). Is there a way to build a rack (one drum set) to create beats as a clip rather than individual instruments or do I have to go with the stock racks?

Thanks in advance.

Erm... Impulse? Or a Drum Rack? Do you have a manual?

I'm not entirely sure what you're asking...

Okay, I'd like to take certain sounds from different drums sets and build those sounds into one unique drum set. I'm reading over the manual now but I'm learning some of the terminology at the same time so it becomes a bit confusing.

Well, first you need to find the samples you want to use. And then it's as easy as dragging in a fresh Impulse or Drum Rack and then dragging in your chosen samples to the slots and saving it as a new preset.

I see. And if I read correctly, you can only edit those sounds when you have the full version of live correct? I'm just got lite yesterday learning my way around it before I upgrade to suite.

Can I even create a drum rack in lite?

No idea. I'd assume so. Try it. Drag the Drum Rack folder to a MIDI track or into the empty space beside the tracks.

I'm sure you can create a drum rack in lite, that'd be gay if you couldnt ha.

side note, whats the difference between a drum rack and an impulse? I had always thought a drum rack would be way better because there is sooo many more slots for drum samples.

I have connected my yamaha dtexplorer e-kit through an maudio fast track pro to ableton, and I have solved all the latency issues I believe (thanks asio!) but when I play a roll on my snare it triggers my drum sounds but they often, um, hit each other, and I don't get my smooth roll sound. any ideas? I've been trying to play with the Retrigger function and number of voices, but im not sure if I'm on the right track any ideas?

thanks guys..

No, it appears you can't edit drum racks in LE. Or in Intro (which I think you're entitled to up/crossgrade to for free with LE).

Anyway, for now, use Impulse. It's different. But you said you only wanted 8 samples anyway.

As for drums "hitting each other", do you mean they cancel each other? And the previous one is always retriggered instead of being allowed to ring out?

So with inpulse I'll be able to build a kit? That's what I'm gathering from your response. Also, with impulse will I be able to edit the sounds theoretically creating new ones? Or is this something that again can only be done in the full edition.

There are some sound manipulation parameters within Impulse. Depends what you want to do and how you want to make these new sounds. You can also route the individual outs if each slot to its own track to allow you to apply effects to each individual sample.
Also, to make new sounds you could just load the original sample into a clip slot or into a Simpler, do what you want to it and change it as you wish and then resample it. Voilà. New sample that you can then put into Impulse as part of your kit.
