Recording Korg MS2000B

Post by donmagicjuan » Sun Jan 09, 2011 8:23 pm

Hey guys,

I am trying to record my Korg MS200B into ableton 8 using a Pod Studio UX2 (formerly called Toneport) and an M-Audio Midisport 1x1. I cannot get any sound much less record the synth.

Based on forum browsing I've learned:

You can record audio, but not midi tracks into ableton with the 2000B.

You need to create an external instrument inside a midi track and arm that track. Monitor needs to be set to in, Not auto. But where does the audio come from, the M-Audio or the UX2? Also, would I be recording into the audio track or the midi turned ext. inst. track? What channels need to be set with regards to Midi to and Midi from?

You need to go into preferences and select the interface as the input and output device. I selected the UX2 because that's the only one I can manually set. Does that sound right?

You need to alter the control surfaces under input and output with regards to the interfaces. Once again, this gets tricky because I am running two interfaces so what goes in row 1 and what goes in row 2?

If anyone has made it this far, thanks for your time. Please let me know if you guys have any insight.

Thanks
Tim

Hi. You don't actually need to use external instrument although it does make things tidier.

1)You can record audio, but not midi tracks into ableton with the 2000B.
That's not true... if you want you can record your movement of dials, key presses and button presses.... as midi data. I've never managed to record the midi data output by the modsequencer or the arp tho.
Some people get midi and some people don't... you can't hear it, its like a score not a soundfile. Sorry if you get midi and I've pointed out the obvious. The MS2000 was made before the usb revolution... so it has separate audio and midi inputs and outputs. The midi ports from your midisport are sending it control information.. what tempo the lfos and arp should be, what notes to play and so on. If your playing the keyboard live you don't need to connect midi at all, but you might want to -- so everything is synced to the host tempo. If you wanted to record the midi notes you play.. so that you could use the sequence with a vst.. basically using the ms2000 as a controller keyboard, then you have to connect the midi out of the ms2000 to the midi in on the midisport. Sound from the ms2000 goes into the ux2.. the left output from the ms2000 is for mono.
2)so long as the ms2000 is set up to receive and transmit on the global midi channel all you have to do is create a midi track - drag external instrument on it and select the soundcard as the audio input and the midisport as the midiout. monitoring should be set to auto.
3)in the midi preferences you need to have the midisport set up so that it can sent track, tempo and remote data out of Live. If you plan to use the ms2000 as a controller (recording midi output) you'll need to switch on track in and (i think) remote in. You'll probably get midi feedback at some point and have to close Live.
I've got a ms2000r, I love it. Its great for live stuff.
Cheers

Hey oddstep thanks for the great advice. I am now able to record tracks. I am recording them in midi tracks but I can't edit the notes once I lay them down correct? Moreover, I'm getting some nasty feedback when I play the recordings back.

I'm also having an issue with the audio output from the MS2000. When I plug the headphones in (any headphones) to monitor the sound, significantly more sound comes from the left side/ear bud. Does anyone know what the source could be?

The way I setup my rig was to have the midi in/out from the Korg running into the out/in of the midisport. I'm using a monster guitar cable to connect the Left Mono output on the Korg to the Stereo Monitor In on my Pod Studio UX2.

In terms of the preferences, I selected built in mic as my input device and UX2 as my output device.
The control surface has midisport as the input and none and the output.

Thanks in advance. I look forward to hearing from you all.
