EQ Three changes sound

Hi guys,

I noticed one strange thing when i put eq three on a channel with track it changes original sound a bit..is that some reported bug or what?..using 8.1 never had any problems before

Yes, its true & confirmed, with settings flat, EQ3 doesn't have a completely flat frequency response. It's not a bug. This has been with all previous versions of Live, you just hadn't noticed it before. If it's absolutely critical that you have identically flat response switch/automate the off button, or use EQ8.

There was an old thread where Henke explained this, maybe if you search you can find it. Basically he said that because EQ3 has such steep filter curves, it could not be completely the same sound when flat. It was designed to be a creative DJ type "effect" EQ rather than a critical tone shaping tool.

thanks for fast reply mate i actually not using it (in this specific case) for production, i use it as eq for my dj set instead of eq on mixer..any suggestions of something similar to it, but with flat sound?

I'd go ahead & use it, it's flat enough for that type of use that it's kind of splitting hairs. That's what I do.

But if you're not satisfied with that you can design something similar in EQ8 essentially by doublng the bands at the same frequency cutoffs. There was a DJ preset for EQ8 someone made that was floating around on the forum. Let me check, I might have a copy of the preset.

it's because EQ3 fucks the phases really hard, probably the less transparent EQ ever.

if you need a more transparent EQ then use 3rdParty Vst, like Apqualiser, sonalksis stuff or fabfilter EQ.

or if no fundz you can indeed easily build yourself a rack based on EQ8 that will have no such drastic sound changes and no latency.

just drop an EQ8, group it as a rack, and map 3 dots gains to 3 knobs, adjusting freq and Q to your taste.

Please correct me if I am wrong. The audio output of every plugin by nature, should all be in phase with itself, right? What does phase matter unless you're blending back in some of the dry signal? Which almost nobody has reason to do that for this application...

Sonalksis have a plugin that will function also as a 3 band DJ EQ? I have most of them. Which one?

The default filter slopes for EQ8 aren't steep enough so best try using at least two dots mapped to each knob.

I meant it fucks the phases if comparing with in signal.
when using non linear filtering, you affect frequencies phases, mean you are effecting a non transparent operation.
so if you drop a 0db signal and put an EQ3 it will clip, at same perceveid audio level, it will physically have an higher level,
wich man want to avoid, cause to reduce cliping you will have to drop down volume. this won't happen with a linear phase EQ,
wich won't affect phases


Basically any EQ can be transformed to an EQ3, EQ3 is just a 3 band crossover. Most eq can get adjustable slopes, from 6 to 36db
depending on the plugin.
so if you rack any of those EQ, mapping a LP and HP points to knobs, and 3 bands gain you get a custom eq3.
you will have a rack with same exact knobs as EQ3 with even the luxury to choose you own slopes.
I don't use sonalksis myself now, but the blue EQ SQXXX something can have sharper slope than EQ8 and make
a good eq3 if you rack it.

edit: if you don't wanna bother build your own rack, just google 3bands EQ vst, they are plenty of them, sorry i don't know
one myself since i prefer build my own rack fabfilter based versions, but im sure there are cool even free ones that are
more transparent than EQ3.

sometimes you need to use your brain when reading then.. i know live eq3 have killswitch, but sounds like shit when you put it. that why i asked for any third party product

Regarding EQ3 though, I realise that it does "colour" the sound a little. But I've never found it to be in a particularly bad way. If you really don't like it though, and it's evident that you don't, I'd try building my own like people have suggested, Googling, searching KVR... We often use it to fatten up kicks or whole mixes, just set flat.

Use it to your advantage.
