well i screwed myself over
I somehow made it so I can't open ableton. The app crashes and nothing happens. It started happening after I tried to switch my VST library folder and accidentally clicked my C: drive. It started scanning, then the app froze and crashed. Hasnt worked since. Tried reinstalling ableton, no dice. If I take all my ableton projects and back them up and wipe my hard drive including the settings on Ableton would it revert back to the factory preset state? I'm pretty concerned because I have ALOT of projects on it.

What operating system?
Try deleting Preferences.cfg, on Windows 7 it's in "C:\Users\User Name\AppData\Roaming\Ableton\Live 8.2.1\Preferences"

yes, everything would be back to factory settings.. unless you save the file that contains you're default settings..
and then put it in the folder once you delete/install everything again.

Moved to Users' Help Exchange.
Also, you'll be able to access the preferences file outside of Live. You should also consider contacting Ableton technical support about this: http://www.ableton.com/support
