Program Change on vst/au, how to determine which bank/preset

Post by ultrasonyk » Fri Dec 31, 2010 6:37 am

Hi all,

it's been a while...

I am curious about one thing.

i want to use program change in clips to change the preset of a VST/AU plugin. Now when i have created
a preset there comes a problem. How do i know which bank/preset number that one would be? When i start
guessing i actually find the right one, but then the plugin has changed it's preset a few times because
of the wrong attempts.

is there any way to determine which bank number to use for the actual preset before guessing around?

unfortunately there are too many standards out there for bank identification. roland and korg etc; in the synth world, arturia and many others just dont respond to any standard preset storage method. there is the cubase method of selection which with soft synths that support this only allow 128 presets to be selected and no banks as far as i can see. arturia has some weird method and have there own unique file storage.

my only suggestion is you experiment by sending different numbers and hopefully you will be able to move from one bank to another. if not, then move your presets in to one bank by copying them.

have fun :D

hi,

well at least i'm not the only person struggling with this issue :)

your last suggestion is a good one - copying all used presets to a own bank. that will make it easier to choose the correct preset since everything is within one bank.

thanks for your reply.

anyway, it may be time to pay attention to all the live devices and try not to use plugins anymore...

actually i stand corrected i just been looking thru this section in the forum and it does seem like a question n answer section so you are in the right place lol

anyway i must admit i love the prog change on clip feature in ableton. i have been wanting something like that for years in cubase. when i ask on their forum why its never been thought about. i get a fat zero!!!!! you know i have a feeling ableton are ex-steinberg people and they left the company after being frustrated and bored and they created the tool that everybody wanted.

Well the last time i used cubase was in the 90's with an atari ST....

i tried a few DAW's in the modern world and ableton is the only answer to my needs.

and yeah, that program change feature in midi clips is great. however, i am still asking myself,
can an ableton device, let's say operator or analog replace a vst/au plugin? in my opinion, it should...

one reason to do that is exterminating the need for a program change clip. you can simply build an instrument
rack with a few live devices and use chain select...
