Intel tablets
After Microsoft announced that it was preparing a version of the next major Windows release for low-power processor designs from Intel rival ARM, an Intel executive said that Intel had been unsuccessfully trying to convince Microsoft to develop a tablet-specific OS for quite some time.

"Hey, we tried to get [Microsoft] to do a tablet OS (operating system) for a long time. Us, and others like Dell," Tom Kilroy, senior vice president and general manager of Intel's Sales and Marketing Group told Cnet on Thursday.

Intel has lost substantial ground to ARM in the mobile space, with ARM's designs making their way into successful devices like Apple's iPhone and iPad.

In October, Intel CEO Paul Otellini admitted that the chipmaker is coming from behind in the mobile race, but called the race a "marathon" that Intel will eventually win.

The HP Slate, a joint tablet venture between HP and Microsoft that was announced last year at the Consumer Electronics Show, saw disappointing sales when it was released last fall

Not sure why you are surprised. It is the PC wars all over again. Apple jumps in front, but their closed fisted view allows the competition to pass it by.

^This is because of exactly what the article says: There's now a ton of Android phone manufacturers and the market is finally getting it's usual saturation of SHIT.

Android phone owner really tries to give his phone some respect but....

Scary how much the pros and cons argument parallels Mac vs. PC.

:x of the day.

Why on earth do they make iMovie for the iPhone but not for the iPad? Raise your hand if you think movie editing is a task better performed on the iPhone than the iPad. :x

And in general there's a big lack of movie editing apps for the iPad. I'm sure this will probably change when the iPad2 comes out with it's 13 cameras, 4 of which shoot 3D.

Why is Steve Wozniak popping up all over the place now? Granted he is a co-founder of Apple, but he always comes off as the drunk uncle at the wedding who after a verbal beat down from his overbearing wife grabs the mike during the toast and apologizes for his behavior but blames it on just being so happy for the couple. :x

I know right? But it WOULD be hilarious for him to get his own show called What Is Steve Thinking?

The fact that I still can't wish list an app when browsing the app store on my iPad = :x

That they changed the landscape lock to a mute button that I'm CONSTANTLY hitting now = :x

That the iPad2 will be out soon and that my current iPad will have a slightly tarnished image = :x

I think all Apple announcements now need to be followed by an official And Now The Misspoken Or Taken Out Of Context Word From Woz.

:P

I also think Apple should rehire him to stand in random employee bathrooms where he hands out hand towels and rambles on about being the pioneer behind universal remotes.

:P

I second the :x on no wish list on the iPad.

I've touched that side button exactly 2 times in the history of my iPad. Once by accident and a second time when I realized after much trouble shooting that, that first accidental touch was the reason my iPad would no longer display in landscape mode. :P

I'm at a serious crossroads now, whether to hold out for the iPad2 or get a Macbook Air to mostly replace what feels like a tank 2008 15" MBP. :x

Gents,

I'm still running 3.2 on my iPad and very happy with it. Is there any real reason to move to 4.2? I think I'd miss the orientation lock, there's no way of getting that functionality back is there? I can see the advantage of multitasking, but it's only been a couple of times when I've really thought that feature would be good right now... Any groundbreaking reason for updating?

At this point I couldn't live without folders.

Also if you upgrade you can still lock the orientation, it's just a software function in the multitask bar instead of using the hardware button.

Cheers, yeah, what I meant was I'd miss the hardware button for orientation lock. Mmmmm... folders... rarely use them on my iPod Touch... guess this is a symptom of not buying enough apps, right?

Well in my case it's a symptom of buying too many apps. :) I literally have more apps than Apple allows you to store on the pages without using folders. 8O :x
