i paid 2000 for rubbish!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
I have had numerous problems with my new powerbook 12inch....
Live freezes, cubase freezes...could this be a result of my firewire 410??? I've sent it to apple to do a hardware test - as far as they are concerned it is working fine, it's just when i run my music apps. They also hit me with 66 bucks because the didn't find anything wrong with it.
I got it back today and it has frozen three times. Once using live once using cubase and then once when i went to shut the machine down - just freezes. I have the appropriate driver for my firewire 410. Do you think my software is corrupt???? Can Macs become currupt if you download sit files from your pc and put them on your mac eg, i did that with the demo of live (couldn't use my install disk because the stupid machine wouldn't read the disk), the firewire driver, plugins also downloaded on pc and then put on mac
Anybody, please help...i am so drained........wuz running everything on my old ibook fine....wish i'd kept it, i have a friggin gig next week too.

Try it without the FW410 and see what that does. mine has started to turn itself off and back on every 25 - 30 minutes, and for no reason. Not even a whisper in the system logs...Mr Wednesday wrote:I have had numerous problems with my new powerbook 12inch....

it has done it before without the 410 - when i was running it on tiger. Im going to do an erase and install, and download everything cleanly straight onto my mac and run live by itself for a while and then put the 410 driver on to see what happens....It's annoying because the crashes are always random and they might happen one day but not the next.

for countless reason stated on this forum over the weeks and months, its m-audio.
they dont make good mac stuff...period.
all the new powerbooks are solid...except the battery life which we all know is crap anyway...its more to do with what goes in them after you buy it thats the problem...
sell your mac if you think its rubbish, and look forward to that wonderful OS called longhorn.

It's actually called Foghorn Leghorn. When you start the machine up it says "Boy, ahsay boy, it looks to me like you wanna type a lettah. D'you want this here big ole chicken to help, ahsay help, your good self?"
Evolution eh? It's by no means a certainty...

OoooOOoh boy...
I experienced similar problems. First of course, ditch the 410 and get something else. Next, if you find the computer crashing randomly WITHOUT the 410 installed try a few things:
Pick up the laptop using one hand in certain spots, especially around the edges. Try lifting it from the bottom with one hand CAREFULLY. Also try sitting down with it at moving it CAREFULLY while it is running to another position. My iBook had some weird logic board problem, that whenever I moved the computer without putting it to sleep first it would freeze. Then it wouldn't start up properly until I squeezed it in the right place and ran a disk repair in safe mode. It was luckily still covered under warranty, and they replaced it free.
As for the FW410, I upgraded because mine just stopped working randomly one day. On thing to try is uninstalling the drivers using the m-audio uninstall utility, restarting, doing a search for all items on your computer that have to do with "firewire 410" or "m-audio", deleting them and restarting. Finally, re-install the drivers. If it still doesn't work, shit can the 410, and get something else. Then try moving the case and whatnot like I described above. If you can consistently get it to crash, take it to an Apple store and demonstrate this to one of the people at the genius bar. Then will you prove to them that it's a hardware problem, and they will return it for warranty work.
Also, get AppleCare if you can afford it. I'm saving for it right now.

do a clean install and do not install anything you do not absolutely need for the gig.
not the tons of vst's and everything, just live 4 and your audio clips.
are you using the exact same version of live that you were using on the ibook?
if you can get it running live well enough for the gig you are ok.
if it crashed using cubase or trying to shutdown, neither of those really matter as you won't need to do those mid-gig.

I am running a 12 inch powerbook and a firewire 410 and have also had problems. This was the instructions (see below) that i recieved from m audio when I told them about it. I have just gone through the repairs they listed and it seems to be working fine, although I was surprised that i encountered more latency using the 410 than the built in sound card ? Hopefully these repairs will have improved things I haven't had a chance to check yet. BTW, does anyone know why it is registering input latency in the audio prefs. (like 7 secs or whatever depending on buffers ) of live when I have no audio inputs selected ?

Thank you for contacting M-Audio Tech Support.
I would recommend that you uninstall all your M-Audio driver software through the Terminal utility, reinstall with the latest version from our website, and then repair your disk permissions (see below).
It is sometimes necessary to completely remove a previous installation of the packages and files that are installed with your M-Audio interface. In OS X, especially 10.3.x, the only way to safely remove all of the components of an install is to log in as the root user, or to use the Terminal utility.
You may use the Terminal utility to remove the previous installation of the driver. This requires that you be careful however, and enter the commands exactly as stated. The OSX Terminal utility requires precision in its command line. Unless the command is entered correctly serious damage can be done to your OS. Commands are case sensitive.
First of all, do a search (Apple key + F) for m-audio and leave the results window open.
Next, open the Terminal utility (in your hard drive, look in Applications-->Utilities-->Terminal) and type:
sudo rm -R
Make sure that you type the space bar after the capital R, in other words:
sudo_rm_-R_
Now drag the file names into the Terminal window from the search results window and they will be correctly entered there. There must be a space between each filename.
Be careful not to move the files which are not related to M-Audio software, there may be some unrelated files which turn up as a result of your search.
After dragging all the files into the Terminal window so their names appear, hit Enter and you will prompted for your administrator password. Type your password and then hit Enter.
If at any point the Terminal asks you if you wish to override permissions, simply hit 'y' and Enter again.
After doing this, repeat the same search with the search terms 'maudio' and 'm audio' and erase them as well using the same procedure.
Please be aware that if you have more than one M-Audio interface, or have downloaded an M-Audio driver from our website that the search will show these results as well.
Then repair your disk permissions:
On your OS X system drive, go in the Applications>Utilities folder and double-click the Disk Utility. Select your system boot volume on the left (the named drive), and then click the First Aid tab on the right and click the button on that page that says Repair Disk Permissions.
This will take a few minutes, it is a general maintenance routine for the OS, very important to ensure the proper functioning of MIDI and audio.

Try very hard to get rid of your laptop and dont waste your time trying to get it fixed because by what Im reading it sounds exactly like a problem which was never solved with a dual CPU G4 and the very same powerbook you have. Call me unlucky or whatever but its true. Both of the machines i bought new were BOTH faulty.
The problem with Apple Macs and especially Laptops, if theres a hardware fault on the mother board your chances of getting a solution to the problem are really slim because all the Mac tech guys I have seen dont seem to be able to fix anything.
Both my machines had to be sent away countless times and at on epoint they were both sent to Ireland!!!!!
To cut a long 9 month story short I never did get the machines fixed and sold them privately which didnt make me feel good as I knew there was something wrong with both of them.
I still use a mac laptop but in my studio I use PC and am very happy for it. I like Macs, but when theres something wrong it can be very difficult to get the problem fixed.

well the first Tiger (OSX.4) certified drivers for the m-audio fwr410 were released TODAY. so you may want to try those drivers.

Heya, firstly I'd like to say it's great to see other folks in Adelaide that use Live!Mr Wednesday wrote:I have had numerous problems with my new powerbook 12inch....

Secondly, regarding your problems, let me try to break it down for you with your questions...
so I notice you do have Tiger installed, which is a bonus (assuming you get the latest version installed, being 10.4.8 )
also 512mb ram might be pushing it, if you can, try to put more into it, from memory the 12" powerbooks can carry up to 1.5GB. speaking of which, when you say freeze, have you ever had a screen come up similar to this?
if so, then it could be a hardware issue (be it the maudio, or the powerbook, and chances are, the ram may not be sitting in properly (just take it out of it's slot if it's not embedded and reapply it)
As for SIT files moving back and forth from windows to osx? its rare for it to corrupt, but stranger things have happened.
Either way, let me know how you go and I'll try to help out any more
good luck!
