midi routing question

Post by iamjoncannon » Wed Jan 12, 2011 3:11 pm

I would like to use the LFO devices in Max for Live to make Live a modular software instrument. What I have in mind is Kontakt, where you can route modulation to parameters and sync it from note on, however I'd like to do this with other VSTs that I like. I saw the LFO devices on maxforlive.com, but tried them out and found (unless I'm doing something wrong) that they modulate relative to the transport rather than when notes are pressed, unlike the LFOs in the native devices like Operator and Analog themselves. I realize you can make automation lanes and map modulation to little controller knobs and blah blah blah but I don't want to do that. (I have also tried routing Midi CC notes through Mac's native IAC but those were note specific, not 'note on' specific, meaning it would only work when eg C3 was pressed, which would then get routed through Channel 1 to x parameter.) This is very frustrating, because for me this is how a software instrument would be controlled "Live." Live's audio effect rack routing is for me a huge improvement over bussing in other DAWs, and if it could do Kontakt-level MIDI routing that would be some next level sh*t. Am I missing something with the retrigger on these devices? I also read somewhere about Live's "runtime API" being inaccessible to M4L, is this the issue? It seems like all that would be required for this to work would be for other devices to receive "note on" information, which doesn't seem like rocket surgery.

also as you can see this is my first post. I'm not a regular on the forum and apologize if what I'm saying is really simple and obvious to everyone else.

It is possible, but not totally. You could modify one of the lfos you downloaded to reset on note-on, but there are a couple important limitations. First, the parameters on devices are monophonic, so you can't effect each voice separately if you play multiple notes at a time. Also, devices in racks are inaccessible, so you can only control macros.
Hope this helps!

I recently updated my LFO to be triggered via note on/offs vs the transport (http://www.maxforlive.com/library/device.php?id=354) but as others had said, it is monophonic, any note will cause a re-trigger. I did also add a dedicated note option, so you could set up a clip that issues a note to control the note triggering.

Cool. Any idea why there is this monophonic limitation? There isn't one in the live instruments themselves...

I had a short glimpse at the device, but I don't see a real restriction, it can simply drive only one parameter. It depends on the controlled device, if this parameter will control stereo, or if each channel has its own controller. If you want to drive two controllers at once, you could duplicate the controller section...
Or even better, use two of the devices, set to different lfo speeds - much cooler...
But maybe I am all wrong about how this is intended to work...;-)
