Dave Smith and Roger Linn's Tempest !
Re: Dave Smith and Roger Linn's Tempest !
Here's a good interview with Roger Linn and Dave Smith about the ideas behind the Tempest. Really good read, even if you're not interested in the Tempest.

Other minor thoughts/interesting stuff:
- display is beautiful
- knobs are the same as any other Dave Smith instrument
- Pads seemed like slightly softer Maschine pads
- Sizewise it's like a stretched out VHS tape
Yeah, should be. It was about VHS height too + the knobs.
Oh, one super minor thing I didn't like:
- The record and play knobs didn't seem to match the aesthetics of the rest of the instrument at all (maybe it's just a prototype). Super minor, but worth mentioning because everything else about the design looked great so they really looked out of place (to me)
Re: Dave Smith and Roger Linn's Tempest !
Can anyone confirm the if knobs and so on would act as a midi controller?

Dave Smith wouldn't design anything that didn't allow for that. I'm almost 100% certain it could.icedsushi wrote:Can anyone confirm the if knobs and so on would act as a midi controller?

Man this thing costs 2000 dollars.
And while I'm not strictly against hardware, in fact I really like vintage shit....I just can't help but think, how much better will your tunes be using this 2000 piece of kit VS. using the 99 dollar MicroTonic.....I mean, does it really sound that different to you?
But I realize that's all subjective anyway, and it's not about getting something because it "makes your music better" but rather because it simply inspires you and makes you excited about making music....from that angle, I get it, but that doesn't change the fact that 2000 dollars on a drum machine is...a lot....Maschine is less than 600 now....

Linndrum II !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Re: Dave Smith and Roger Linn's Tempest !
I was eagerly awaiting this machine. I look forward to some user testimonies, for sure.
I was a bit underwhelmed by the features shown in the videos. The analog element is the bomb for sure. I LOVE that it is 8x2. But after playing with Maschine, hmmmmmm. I was expecting some new innovative approaches to realtime beat manipulations, as according to Mr. Linn's pre-ads. Launching scenes? Muting? Powerful, but not new.
I think that Maschine threw these guys for a "loop". But I'm glad they finally committed and put something out, anyway. I hope I am wrong and that Tempest (not crazy about the name) is full of some really cool features.

Re: Dave Smith and Roger Linn's Tempest !
Here's my short list of reasons why Tempest would be of interest to me if I had the $$$:
It's got an analogue vibe to it, the filters are analogue. <- There are great sounding digital filters for sure, I just like the slop of analogue.
It requires no computer.
It's thought out very explicitly to get beats down with, there's no browser or driver incompatibilities.
There's ZERO latency involved compared to Maschine, Geist etc. zero!
It's not going to become useless in ten years because Windows or OSX are completely rewritten, and the software developer that makes them has decided to abandon it or went bankrupt. <-- This is fucking relevant! Short list off the top of my head of plug ins I've bought that are no longer developed.
Pluggo (unless you think paying $299 on top of what you paid initially for the plug in is cool)
B4II
Pro53
Spectral Delay
Akoustic and Elektric Piano, Intakt, Kompact (these can be used in Kontact, but you have to own Kontact)
Apulsoft ethernet plug in
Plus about five or so audio related plug ins. Plus the fact that once a company adds enough features to an upgrade it's often not compatible with older versions of that plug in, so older half finished songs if not updated will have multiple plug ins that simply don't load.
NOne of these problems exist with hardware. there are occasions where a chip goes out of production, but the one case of that I can think of is the Juno 106 chip, and some dude makes replacement chips.
Sure, for a lot of people these things aren't important, these are just why I think hardware will always be relevant.

Maschine is not Analogue/Zero/Latency plus controller capabilities, nor can you use a USB keyboard controller to play Machine as a real analogue synth.
DJ's pay more for mixers, I'd say the price is what I expected. OF course I wish it was cheaper, but I will be saving money for the purchase of Tempest and I'm pretty certain I will feel like it was money well spent, especially YEARS down the line.
It will definitely inspire me to make a lot of tunes. Although it may not make my productions sound too much better, it will definitely make my live performances sound SUPER RICH!
Re: Dave Smith and Roger Linn's Tempest !
As with just about anything there is a significant difference in price between something that's pretty damn good, and something that is close to the top of the line. You always pay a ton for that last 5-10% of improvement.mholloway wrote:
