finding midi ports? (for akai lpk25 and lpd8)

Post by Pumpkin_Howie » Fri Jan 21, 2011 8:54 pm

hey i recently got the akai lpk25 and lpd8 and am using ableton 8.1.1, however i cannot get ableton (or my operating system) to detect any midi ports?? i think because it is a slightly older version the lpk25/lpd8 are not selectable from the control surface drop down menu in the midi sync tab. i am running windows xp and both the controllers are usb, how do i get my computer to recognise the usb ports as midi ports??

tthanks for any help and sorry if this post was a bit jumbled and hard to understand!

Hi

Apologies If I've misconstrued but this might help.

I've got an mpk61 and an lpd8.
There is currently no "control surface" selection for the lpd8 in 8.2.1 either
Believe it's in the beta being tested now.

However you just need to enable the "USB Audio Device" in the "MIDI Ports" window.
Options
|
Preferences
Click the "MIDI sync Tab"

In XP when you connected your devices they should have either said devices detected and ready or asked for a Driver cd.

A way to force this if you're not sure is to swap the USB port they are plugged into, this causes the bus to redect them.
Do one at a time.

I'm using XP SP3 with a mpk61, lpd8 and 2 lauchnpads.
And the two akai devices appear as USB devices, so it can be tricky detecting which is which with a lot of akai devices.

thanks for the reply!

xp has detected both the devices, but neither are showing up in the 'midi ports' window. the only thing listed in there is an output - "Output: Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth"

am i missing something out? is there something i need to enable in ableton on order for it to detect these usb devices in the midi ports window?

dunno if this is your problem, but live won't re-scan the midi ports once it has started - they have to be there before you start the program. So if you're plugging them in after starting live, restart live and they should be there.

hmm

I'm not aware of anything else in Live to open/detect additional ports for midi control.
But then I'm pretty new to this.

If you look in.....
right-click "My Computer" and select "manage"
select "Device Manager" on the left.
Expand the "Universal Serial Bus controllers" + symbol (apologies if this is sucking eggs stuff)

My lpd8 and mpk61 have an entry each as "USB composite Device"
If I right click and properties them, the location says "Location 0(LPD8)" etc.
Can you see yours listed?

In Live the LPD8 actually appears as a "USB audio device".

As a note, my lpd8 is connected through a HUB and the mpk61 directly.
