For me, the portability / reliability of the MIDIBuddy is easily worth running a translation program to turn the program change messages into something useful for Ableton.
It's not cool and it's not new, but it's light and it's solid and it works.

Rig Kontrol 3 here. Works as a standard MIDI controller with ability to send note values which Live loves, and also as a dedicated controller for NI Guitar Rig. It was on sale for 50% off ($144) around Christmas, I'm not sure why anybody wouldn't have picked it up for that price? MIDI in/out, inputs for more expression pedals Also works as a audio card 2 in 2 out, with pre amp for your guitar and one other string or key.
I use it in conjunction with a Kore 1 controller to do all audio for practice and live.
The only reason for that is because Kore 1 has a separate output for headphones to feed a click track to the drummer.

Yes, that's exactly what it does. And I have to say in the SoftStep's defense that it works flawlessly, is very tactile and responsive, and easy to do. It seems strange, and if you've had a few too many it might get scary, but it does truly work. The Leveller wrote:The softstep thing: Did you say you can use it as an x/y controller or rotary patterns for knob emulation?
How the fark do you do that on stage? Standing on one foot trying to draw a curve with the other?
Adding XY to foot pads is exactly the kind of innovation that's needed with foot controllers. I can't fault Keith McMillan Inc. for setting some pretty ambitious goals. Part of the reason I'm so pissed off at those guys is that they've been promoting that thing for over a year prior to release. I understand the notion of creating a buzz, but honestly....

the MFC10 is a tank and the expression pedal is great plus it has inputs for 4 more (which i use)
Yeah the MFC10 is an interesting little beastie. I've not done any homework on that thing, actually.
Again, with the SoftStep the FUCKING INCREDIBLE thing is this: whatever MIDI message routing and format you have in mind, the SoftStep was designed to do it. For instance, you can set one pad to be an expression pedal by programming a Y only movement response. You could use a CC# to handle that. Then, at the same time, you could tell the SAME pad to send another CC (or MIDI note or program change etc etc etc) the instant the pad felt pressure. You could then have it send another CC or note etc the instant you took your foot off the pad. This means you can use a pad to turn on a device, act as an expression pedal, and turn off a device. And, BTW, you've got 3 more parameter slots to send out even MORE messages, lol. Fuck ME.
Not only that, but it has this 'slew' function that automatically smooths out - on a curve - the parameter range you are sending. Jesus Help Me.

Got the UMI3 too.
Hey LSZ, please let us know when the software gets stable on the Soft Step!

I sold an FCB1010 in order to help pay for it. Nothing wrong with the FCB1010, especially considering the price. The Leveller wrote:oh no! Missed the special! That is the one controller I think I would ditch the fcb for. Damn!
I have to say that all expression pedals that aren't built like total tanks (Electro Harmonix etc.) feel a little soft to me though.
I suppose if I was just a soft synth player I might think the RK3 was overkill, but the pres on the RK3 sound pretty dammed good IMO considering.

That softstep does sound good, but its the whole 'tap dancing' routine...puts me off the whole thing a little. Now we have to do little pirouettes as well. Tap and ballet.
I guess you can still use the RK3 as a controller only though, and a different interface if you're not happy with the pres, but NI stuff is generally good stuff IMO.

All I wanted was to control simple transport controls, a few scenes and generally faff around without reaching for the mouse. At the time I could not find anything simple and the FCB scared me so I decided to make one

I love that controller! Somewhere between complete farcical comedy and complete absolute f**king genius!gjm wrote:All I wanted was to control simple transport controls, a few scenes and generally faff around without reaching for the mouse. The RK3 does look great, but I can't stand stomp clickers.
You see, I play delicate sissy music and the CLICK CLICK CLICK ruins the very deep and introspective mood I'm trying desperately to create.
But in terms of build, it looks like you could launch it off a 10 story building.
And is that puppy even available as a stand-alone purchase? Since you and I started chatting about GR4 awhile back I've been following that thing and it seems as though it's only available as part of a full software buy.
