I could absolutely care in the least how my tone or approach contributes to your buying decision making process. And talk about drama: You register at the Ableton forum for the sole purpose of trying to dress me down. omfg.
Whatever you say, creep. You obviously made no attempt to get support before having a tantrum and returning it, illustrated by the timely replies of the KMI folks here being met with your ultra-mature response, "I don't have it anymore but you can send me one so I can break it". Your bad experience seems much more likely to be of the nature Machinesworking described than actual buggy software. I'm excited to hear more about the softstep, but certainly not from you.

By the way, I registered in 2009, just like you. See those little numbers on the side? Guess I spend more time making music than trolling Ableton's forums.

THAT is the fucking truth, MW. But I did put it through it's paces. Hours dude. HOURS. I was insane by the 5th hour of time spent on the SoftStep. I'm no computer/software genius, but I am fairly adept at solving my own problems. In my insanity defense, I'll add that there's not one thing I've bitched about in terms of gear problems on this or any other forum. I've had difficulties with things, but always worked them out on my own or with a bit of developer help. The only other hot button issue for me is CoreMIDI shortcomings with iDevice apps, but that's another matter. My point is that I've no history on this forum of whining and bitching about gear. Not like this. I've taken the Ableton bugs in stride for the most part. This is the first time I really lost it, so I guess there's a first time for everything.

I do regret returning the thing. THAT was, admittedly, a stupid mistake. If for no other reason than it would have been great to post video of the ABSOLUTE CRAZINESS that was occurring in front of me. I've never, in all my years of software issues (Ableton, Adobe, AutoDESK, etc etc etc) seen something that was so fucked up. I kept stepping back, taking breaks, taking deep breaths, walking away for 1/2 hour or so until my head cleared. I'd go back, delete everything, start over from absolute scratch, and the same shit kept happening.

Question is: Do I buy another one and give it another go?

This should demonstrate carefully all the steps involved in properly creating and saving presets. This should help everyone understand the methods as well as demonstrate that all functionality is completely usable in the current versions. It will be a screen capture from Sarah's macbook pro, along with dialoge to walk you through the process. Sarah should have the video completed by tomorrow evening, I will post a link to it on this forum as soon as it becomes available.

If I'm proven wrong on the software stability, I'll come to you guys with hat in hand and offer the mea culpa.

Looking forward to the video. Let's make sure that the test clearly shows that it's version v1.031 software and vJ1 firmware - which by far gave us the most difficulty.

I still want to hear from just ONE impartial MacBook user who's had success with v1.031 and vJ1.

My spec:
MacBook
OSX 10.6.6
2.16GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
2GB RAM

Very standard stuff there.

Honestly, EVERYONE runs into mental bottlenecks, no exceptions. I've searched, documented and found solid reproducible bugs where the cause was obvious.
I've had other bugs that remained unreproducible, and unsolvable (Logic 7.0 did me in, updates fixed it).

You can mess around with problem solving for hours easy, and still miss the issue. Case in point, I sincerely didn't think a mouse driver could hose Ableoton Live in regards to Sync, and mostly leave DP and Logic alone, just didn't seem possible but it was the issue.

You get major problems like you're talking about with the SoftStep and it's EASY hours to find the culprit. Tell me you did ALL OF THESE THINGS, and then say you spent enough time testing it out.

Remove all MIDI drivers except the SoftStep ones. (mostly these are in Library/Audio/MIDI Drivers, but it's possible that some company threw one as an extension, System/Library/Extensions. I have a MOTU midi driver kext in there as well as a Guitar Rig kext, both could possibly be a problem with a particular piece of software.

Same with USB derivers in general, I'm assuming the SoftStep is USB? FYI all of these you don't actually trash, just put them in a folder on your desktop, and restart teh computer to "remove" the driver from the system.

Same with any third party software you have installed that runs all the time. For instance I have a CPU and hard drive meter plu an easy access audio app in my menu bar, and a little app called Mouse Locator that always run, no CPU hit to speak of, but a possible conflict.

Make a Folder for VSTs called "VST disabled" same with Audio Units Put all your VSTs and Audio Units in their respective folder, make sure to pair repeats ie kontakt AU and kontakt VST at the same time. Test, if it works put 1/2 of the one in the disabled folder back, if it messes up the SoftStep software somehow, put 1/2 of the ones you just put back back into disabled etc. <-- this is a long shot sure, but it's been an issue before some AU or VST causes problems by it's very presence in your instance of Live without being called up.

Audio cards, make sure you only have the one for your hardware installed. If I recall right logic and MOTU both would automatically instal an audio driver along with MIDI drivers in case you bought one of their cards.

USB cable and/or MIDI cable replace them before writing it off as software.

This is a short list off the top of my head, other things include trashing Preferences and doing "clean" instals to make sure the driver for the device is properly writing over what could be a corrupted instal. All that stuff though adds up to a lot more than a weekend without tech support help.

@MW. There are 3 items on the list that I didn't do.

1. Didn't disable VSTs/AUs. In part because much of my fiddling was done with only the SoftStep software running.

2. Didn't try replacing the USB cable.

3. Didn't check other USB drivers.

All of these might have contributed to the problem, but not likely. Guess I'll never fucking know now. :x

I actually just reinstalled the SoftStep software v1.031. While I don't have the hardware, you can still check it out and make presets and stuff. So far I've had no preset naming or config errors.

But RAM usage? The other problem I was having? 700MB. 8O That's insane. I've only got 2GB of RAM, ffs. That doesn't leave me with a lot of wiggle room.

RAM is cheap, you can instal 4GB in it.
Sounds like it might have been a hardware failure if the software runs fine without it connected. Either USB cable or the hardware itself was a dud.
USB cables are my enemy that way. Have had more USB cables die than firewire, audio, and ethernet cables combined!

Now I'm thinking about ordering another one asap. :x

I'm not afraid to eat crow. Not at all.

I want this thing to work and am willing to give it another go.

But the RAM usage scares the crap out of me.

Danny@KMI: Is 700MB of RAM usage normal??

Well it's good to see you can finally presets, but this definitely points the issues at some sort of hardware problem. It could be the cable, or maybe even the SoftStep itself.

The editing software does appear to take up a bit of RAM, however we have never had any memory problems running alongside heavy DAW's such as Live, Logic, Pro Tools, etc... But this is exactly the reason we have a Standalone mode, so you can test and build your presets from hosted mode, and once completed you can save them to Standalone mode and do everything without the software.

Dude, why don't you grab the software off the site and load it onto your machine? You don't need the pedal to test it out and see how much RAM it's going to use.

Okay, Danny. I've been hard on you guys and I regret sending the thing back so soon. I'm going to pick up another one up tomorrow am at Amazon for next day delivery. It should be here on Thursday afternoon. Let's resume this conversation then, and I'll post my progress here - though without blow by blow details because the Abes are probably already pissed (you guys should seriously think about having your own forum). If I run into problems are you willing to work them through with me via email or Skype?

Tnx Danny. And tnx for being patient with my *overthetop* tirade. You guys have been pure class.

I've just ordered a new one and it'll be here tomorrow.

I'll put it through it's paces, work with you folks should issues arise, and post the results here.
