how to stretch samples? make them longer?

Post by kodiacc » Thu Jan 27, 2011 1:42 am

Hi all.

im sure the question was asked before but its not so easy to search for it here.

i want to get these kind of long snares which they use in hiphop beats like wiz khalifa - goodbye or this plane.
they got the snare drum sound like "tchhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh" with a very long decay/release time.. i tried to add some reverb to stretch out the snare samples. it helps a bit but wont work like i did it. so basically i want to know if there is any option to extend a sample without destroying its sound.

when its not possible, then i guess they just using snare sumples which are longer and have more decay. do they just use longer/better samples? i mean there should be a workaround ;)

Does it make sense to kinda like produce own snare and kick sounds? tried it out once but never really got what i wanted. i got a snare .. i got a kick but not this kind of i want.

i mean i got a lot of drum samples now. there are so many out there. but if i just want to create this special sound i like, i should have the possibility.. i tried adding effects like overdrive and reverb and some delay.. but they always telling in these tutorials that adding more plugins and effects won't make the original sound. you should have to come up with a basic sound which is already kind of what you want.

hope to get some good ideas from you guys here!

/////EDIT:
//okay. got one tip, just edit the BPM in the Sample Window/Clip Editor.

I got a snare sound which would sound like some "tchhhhhh" if i would stretch it out, but when i add more BPM then it sounds like there is an LFO going on ;)

//adding 2: oooh there is an option down there in a select field. if i chose "complex" it works ;)
nice, i will play a little bit with this, but maybe you got some better ideas.

Still, i wont get the effect i want. i listened again to some wiz khalifa songs.. and in many tracks there is this effect on the snare drum, that it kinda "halls out" - i dont know, maybe its a decent reverb but i cant get it done..

//EDIT 3:

i googled something like "snare reverb" and found some tips. tried it out, what do you think?:

that snare in the song good bye is not reverb. its another sample behind the snare with reverb on it. it sounds like a vocal sample actually, sounds of a crowd or something. and it sounds like the snare is side chained to it, or it's manually ducked.

anyway it does sound at first like its simply a snare with reverb, but its not. what really gives it away is the ending to the song. you hear the vocal sample reversed as the song ends. its seperate from the snare.

hope that helps.

btw you dont want to stretch your snare. thats for sure. try messing with some samples. Nick's tutorials does a series of sound design using simpler. I would check it out if I were you. peace

hi.

okay. that would be where somebody (julio juliano = producer of wiz khalifa) did a trick which maybe not everybody could do. i mean, has not that much experience with producing ;) sounds tricky.

i played alot now with reverbing and EQing on my drum samples. its definatley not stretching, yeah. the parameters of the reverb have to fit. also a compressor with a lot of output and then a limiter not to have to much gain in the track makes it "fatter" i guess.

also a few tracks with very nice sounding snares are:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=siYBM72LNgQ

okay, got the point where the "vocal" which produces the "fake reverb" .. really intresting stuff. any idea how to get this vocal sound like this? its changed.. Yeah, now, that i know, that it is a vocal i can hear it cleary .. its like a stretched yyyyeeeeaaahh..
i guess its a vocal then mixed with a noisy vocoder or something like that. it got definately a lot of noise in it..

no. you could do this very easily. nothing that any rap producer does is out of your reach. you have professional equipment now ;).

it sounded to me like it was a sample of a crowd cheering, with reverb on it. not a single person. Like a short snip of them cheering. What you need to do is download some crowds cheering and cut your own sample, maybe re pitch it with the transpose knob. Have the snip fade out and put some reverb on it and it should be good.

But if you notice in the song the snare is able to cut through the vocal sample. What i mean is that the sample is not really heard until the snare is actually finished. This is can be done a few ways. If you click on the pad with the sample in it in drum rack it will show you the simpler interface for the sample. Turn up the attack knob. Now the sample will fade in. But the more professional approach would probably to achieve this "ducking" effect through side chaining using the compressor.

There are a multitude of tutorials showing sidechaining on youtube, here is one made by Ableton. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQnOQWLURFU

I'm glad I could help you out cuz this gave me some good ideas for my own beats. Here's one I made yesterday. http://soundcloud.com/cut_cutta/bt-stut ... ntry-gated I only learned Ableton in the past month. Never made beats before that. Just watch a lot of tutorials and you can learn everything too. Peace.

no, its not out of reach, but there should be a difference between a rap producer who earns a lot of money to a home producer who uses this shit for like a week ;)? or not? more experience ..

okay.. thanks.

i know sidechaining .. using it also a lot on basslines in electro tracks..

=) okay, show me what you did then.. i mean with reverbed drums ;)

your track is superb. really. there is really a lot of pressure and loudness on it. really nice. when i make beats its always kind of loungy and quiet. never really a huge beat. dont know what im doing wrong ;)

so youve got only 1 month music production and then this? nice nice..! respect

//edit:
seems like all Wiz Khalifa producings using this hall reverbed snare.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=82kGsIzc ... re=channel

there is another one. really nice. want to do something to. it gives the track this "headbanging" groove .. this long snare

would really like to see you play around and show me something! :)

Yeah, I only got ableton a month ago and its my first DAW. Never messed with MIDI before but i had a shitty alesis sr-16 drum machine when i was 13 lol. but i been studying this shit real hard, i watched like 30-40 hours of tutorials

regarding the "say yeah" track, actually that is not simply a reverbed snare. It sounds as if its a tight "trap snare" with barely any reverb but under it is a quieter clap with lots of reverb on the clap.

That's actually the key to fat drum sounds; layering. But even before that the key is good samples. And to make the beat more exciting its better to use atleast 2 seperate kinds of snares. I usually use a clap on 2 and 4 plus a tight "trap snare" for syncopation. This is also what all the trap producers like drumma boy and ke on the track do. Sometimes if you layer the drums you also have to cut frequencies to make them mesh. This tutorial explains it well and gives good tip for testing drum sounds. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MVzdO5_fJdU

Also on that track it got a little extra oomph cuz my homie mastered it using multiband dynamics. but it only made a *tiny* bit of difference to pack a bit more punch. it still slammed. actually I think the kick and snare are abit too loud in retrospect. i'm watching a tutorial on how to master using Ozone now. that's what a lot of pros use. but mastering is really just an afterthought, if your shit doesn't bang already, mastering wont help.

Anyway I'm far from pro and don't even even qualify to be teaching; i'm still learning and only made a couple beats so far, but if you hit me up on skype or yahoo im sure we could both learn stuff.

my skype is seattletruth, my yahoo is seattle.truth

peace

im studying for school right now, so my post wont be that long. will edit my post later and write more.

what i want to say is, that not everytime layering drums is the best result. i watched a very very good tutorial from german electro/house producer thomas gold, and hes sayin he aint EQing/effecting drums neither layering. he just take them as they are, he just using the lower band for drums and bass and all the other instruments he cuts off these low frequencies. but his mastering rack is dangerous ;) 7 plugins each like 1500$ ;) and for him it makes a lot of difference.

its a 4 part tutorial each 20 mins, but one of the best ive seen ever.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hEuwhp2A84U - its in german so i dont know if it will work for you but many terms are english anyway and you should see the effect. specially part 4 in which he masters the shit out of his track :)

will add you in skype and comment the rest later!
