Live 5: MP3 - NO NO!

Post by Skylit » Thu Jun 02, 2005 9:13 am

Amazing news, all of the features in Live 5 sound fantastic, but why the hell did they bring in MP3 support? This will put a lot of perspective customers from the pro area off. And MP3 is just for listening, and should not be involved in music creation process. Those who need it, could always convert WAV>MP3. If mp3 support uses some audio resources, this is very sad news.
Hopefully, everything's fine anyway.

well ii dont use mp3 myself, but I would imagine there are a HELL of alot of people out there who Dj with mp3's . If you dont want to use them....hey dont use them, its no skin of your nose.I really do hope it puts alot of people from the "PRO" area off. They are usualy alot of Anal retentive bods , hahahahaha. They can keep there pro-tools bum to themselves. I worked with pro tools for 3 years and it just sucks Bottoms creativley compare to live :D

Yes its definitely geared towards the DJing side of things. Its a big plus in my opinion. Although you lose quality with MP3, if you actually play out live, I reckon you can get away with it say if you've encoded stuff at atleast 192 rather than 128. It would free up a hell of a lot of hard disk space (and RAM too) - which you can fill with even more music!

I wonder what the performance hit is though when using MP3s. I assume Live has to decode them on the fly or something like that?

i have stuff from beatport at 320khz mp3.

you give me one good reason why I should have to get my 400MB MP3 directory and turn it into 2.5 gigabytes!

when you say "mp3 is just for listening" - I think thats what this function is for - DJs playing tunes.

I'm no DJ ...
but all my old Vinyl and CDs are in my loft as I converted them all to MP3 ages ago. Thats a loooot of albums and if they weren't all between 192 (early days) and 320 (more recent) I would need about half a Terrabyte of disk space just for my albums!

As for the quality of released music from Live being affected... I dont think that many sane people will be using 128kbps mp3 vocal tracks (etc) in their released compositions ;)

What a crazy comment.

Firstly - if you don't to use the feature you don't.
Secondly, if you follow the forums, there has been huge requests for LIVE to support mp3s (me included)
A vast percentage of DJs play using CD these days - and many of these tracks were infact mp3s - swapped online or downloaded from sites like AudioJelly which allow you to download high quality mp3s.

Supporting mp3s is a dream come true for me as it means I no longer have to convert all my files to wav.
I would not dream of producing a track using mp3 samples, but for the purpose of DJing mp3 quality is fine.

don't use the MP3 support if you think it's a prob. there, easy :)

so what i want to know is this: if i have a wav all marked up, can i convert to a mp3 and the .asd file/analysis still apply?

i suspect no but if it does then that is very cool.

i will like to see a MP# warped in Live being its a compressed file and not a wav. Im not to happy with this at the moment but will wait an see on the results. If they mp3 I hape that means the more then one standard.
